As Desperation Day dances went, this was probably not the most tacky ever. Of course given that it was Desperation Day, so tacky really went with the territory.

There was glitter, oh, was there ever glitter in a multitude of sparkly colours. But even more so, it seemed that the decorators had taken the 'Hearts Afire' theme literally as large cut out hearts adorned the walls. Each with a tissue paper 'flame' bursting from the top of it. Streamers in all shades of pink twisted across the ceiling, forming almost a canopy. Which hopefully would not be literally set afire. The Fire Department would probably disapprove of that. Also a lot of people's dresses would be ruined.

Let's stay away from any literal fire, okay, guys?

Which was adorable, and had Kennedy's grin taking a distinct turn for the doofy as she nibbled on a cheese cube of her own. "Kinda guessed that about you, funny enough," she teased.

She was twelve sometimes, and had a hard time turning down the opportunity for gratuitous jokes like that.

Tara grinned, only faintly abashed. "And here I thought I was really subtle about it," she said. "What gave me away?"

"Well, the fact that you seem to really like kissing me was a huge clue," Kennedy drawled, ducking her head to nuzzle at Tara's shoulder.

That nuzzle? That made Tara very grateful for bare shoulders. "I ... might actually love kissing you," she returned, and tried to feed Kennedy a grape.

Oh, Kennedy was a huge fan of bare shoulders. And trying to catch Tara's fingertips between her lips as she took the grape.

"I might kind of love it when you do."

Tara wiggled her finger lightly against Kennedy's lips, feeling giddy. "Then maybe I should do it even more."

If she was going to do that, Kennedy was definitely going to flick her tongue against that fingertip. "What," she asked, her eyes glinting mischievously, "right here?"

"We have to go home eventually," Tara pointed out mischievously. "Fiona's skipping the dance, do you know what Worf is up to?"

That grape thing had been fun, so Kennedy snagged one from the fruit tray to return the favor. "No idea. He might show up, or not, but he said he'd be cool about giving me privacy if I need it. Unless we don't want to go all the way back to the dorms, but..."

"... there's more privacy back at the dorms," Tara said. Almost whined, really.

She lowered her voice. "You think we could be alone here?"

"Sort of." Kennedy sidled a little closer, offering her the grape. Possibly, not by the snack table would be a start. "We can always find a corner, or sneak into one of the offices, or..."

No, Kennedy. Not that.

Tara ate the grape from Kennedy's fingers, taking her time about it. "Are you always this creative?"

Oh, Tara, don't get drunk on endorphins and punch and do something dumb.

Kennedy nuzzled at her shoulder again, not in any hurry to move her fingers away from Tara's lips. "I can be extremely creative when I have a good reason to be."

Kennedy, don't encourage her.

Tara bumped her hip into Kennedy's. "Think anyone's watching us?" she asked, glancing nervously to the chaperones.

Kennedy tried to tug her a few feet away from the snack tables, which was more awkward than it strictly should be when she was staying this close to Tara.

"Nah. They're not watching that close." She wasn't really looking, but then she was feeling a little reckless.

Tara stepped closer yet to kiss her, lightly. "I ... haven't ever really been in this building," she offered. "We could take a walk and see what we can find."

It was a good night for recklessness.

There was glitter and streamers, and Tara in a dress that made Kennedy really not want to stop looking at her, and thinking with her brain seemed like the least important idea in the history of ever right now.

"We've got time to dance later anyway," she agreed (a little breathlessly for such a light kiss), still lingering close enough to rub noses.
