As Desperation Day dances went, this was probably not the most tacky ever. Of course given that it was Desperation Day, so tacky really went with the territory.

There was glitter, oh, was there ever glitter in a multitude of sparkly colours. But even more so, it seemed that the decorators had taken the 'Hearts Afire' theme literally as large cut out hearts adorned the walls. Each with a tissue paper 'flame' bursting from the top of it. Streamers in all shades of pink twisted across the ceiling, forming almost a canopy. Which hopefully would not be literally set afire. The Fire Department would probably disapprove of that. Also a lot of people's dresses would be ruined.

Let's stay away from any literal fire, okay, guys?

Edmund raised an eyebrow at Claire. "Not afraid," he assured her quite calmly (he did have two sisters, after all, and as such was used to such heckling). "I'm trying to decide how best to approach the topic." Well that was diplomatic.

"You look lovely this evening, would you care to dance," Claire said.

It was her advice for how to approach the topic, not something she was saying to him.

"Well thank you," Edmund replied dryly, "but I wouldn't want Jon to get the wrong idea."

Claire rolled her eyes. "Whatever, but see how easy that was?"

"Well, if it's as simple as you put it, then perhaps I should go and try it."

"You definitely should," she encouraged. "I'll see you later!"

"Hopefully in one piece," he replied playfully with a nod.

"I don't think any girls will break you for asking them to dance."

"Are you sure we go to the same school?"

Claire had to laugh at that. "Okay, so some of the girls here are tough. But if you're being polite, which I cannot imagine you not being, you should be fine."

"Here goes then. Have a good night, Claire."

"You too, Edmund."
