Mystery Sign Theatre, Thursday Evening

It certainly wasn't a date, no, but Jono and Ariel had set a date, in order to go to the cinema after Glee Club in order to catch whatever happened to be playing at the time. Really, rather than thinking of it as a date or anything like it, Jono preferred to think of it as a prize. A prize for not feeling a jot more than a whit better in the face of realizing that he was a horrible onion murderer once it was pointed out that at least he'd stayed a male on Sunday.

... It didn't actually make full and complete sense to Jonothon, either.

//I think you'll like this one, luv,// Jono noted as they stepped into the line. //Plenty of music, supposed to be quite artistic.//

And it helped that he was a bit of a Beatles fan.

Oh, Jono. You didn't want to know.

"Oh, look!" Ariel said, not a diversionary tactic at all. "They've got a special on JuJuBes!"

That earned a squint. Jonothon was not so easily distracted by JuJuBes!

For obvious reasons.

//That well, mm?//

"I've been busy?" Ariel offered, hopefully, before biting her lip slightly and turning her attention to the person at the concession stand so that she could get her large popcorn and JuJuBes and malted milk balls and gummi worms and soda.

//Yes, I suppose I can see how autumn break could have anybody run absolutely ragged,// Jono replied, his tone insinuating a snort that he simply wasn't capable of otherwise.

... Wow, Ariel liked junk food.

//Are you planning on stuffing all of that into yer gob?//

"Well, no," said Ariel with a smile. "Half the popcorn's for throwing, remember? And I wasn't going to lug my saxophone all the way to Vail with me...What if something happened to it?"

//I brought my guitar,// Jono pointed out. //Spent a few mornings just playing it in th'lobby, actually.//

Of course, Jono was good at playing the guitar. But really, he figured the point still stood. Right? Right!

"Aw," Ariel's lower lip stuck out just a little bit. "I missed that. I'd have loved to hear you play by the fireplace, warming up with some cocoa or something..."

//Well, it isn't as though me having my guitar out is something of a novelty, really.//

Though, granted, it did tend to lack that 'warming up with cocoa by the fireplace' charm when he had it out around here.

"No," Ariel agreed, "but I still always like listening to you play."

... Curses, Ariel. Jono couldn't properly lecture you on practising with your sax when you were shamelessly flattering him like this!

//Well, I enjoy playing well enough. I suppose people can just tell when they hear me play.//

Hey, it wasn't shameless flattery if it was true.

"That, and you're good. Really good. I can say that now, because I've had someone showing me all sorts of new things about music."

//And you weren't certain before?//

Hey, Jono had to check, sometimes.

To that, Ariel had to give Jono a little shove. Or, rather, as best a shove she could with her hands filled with snacks, so it was mostly a nudge with her elbow.

"You know what I mean. Of course I was certain before; I've just had it confirmed, how's that?"

Jono swayed a little with the nudge, smiling and shaking his head a little.

//I suppose I can live with that,// he replied. //I guess you'd have no basis for comparison, really, would you?//

"I have plenty of basis for comparison, I'll have you know!" Ariel insisted, pulling herself up as properly as one laden with junk food could manage. "I'm very classically trained, and my mother had the most amazing voice in the whole world. She set the bar pretty high, you know."

//But no guitar,// Jono noted. //Which means I'm safe, for th'time being.//

If another aspiring rock guitarist emerged on the island, then Jono would have to fight to defend his place of prestige, perhaps. But otherwise? Nope. Totally safe.

//You must've gotten yer voice from her, then.//

Ariel smirked a bit at that. "Do I get to pretend now that I don't think I've got a good voice at all so that you have to insist on it until I'm convinced?"

//Only if yer th'sort to shamelessly dig for compliments,// Jono chuckled, shaking his head a little. //Of course, I would have to point out that unlike yer experience with th'guitar, I've been listening to stirring vocals my entire life, and so I'd like to think I'm qualified enough to serve as a judge of these things.//

Ariel, looking suitably impressed, gave a nod. "Of course. And I've actually sort of grown up always hearing about my voice and how good it is, so, sorry, it's not breaking news or anything."

She said this all with a sort of giggle, though, almost as if she was rolling her eyes at the comments, in a way that meant she wasn't one to let it go to her head all the same. She was glad for her voice, of course. How could she not be, loving music as she did? But she hardly wanted to be just a voice. And liked to think that this summer showed that she wasn't.

Really, it had. Having actual spoken conversations with Ariel was still a bit of a novelty for Jono, now and then.

//It figures,// he mused. //I'm always th'last one to find out about these things.//

Ariel gave Jono a soft smile after that. "Not the last," she promised him. "You're actually the first to hear me sing after I got my voice back, you know. Well, second."

She supposed she'd definitely have to count Christian.

"Definitely not last, though."

//Oh...// Well, in that case, Jono was going to have to give the back of his head an awkward scratch. //Then... I'm flattered. Thank you, Sunshine.//
