Homecoming Carnival Post II | Park | Friday | October 22

The Homecoming Carnival was in full swing and decorated according to the theme: blues and greens of all sorts, and little fish decorations everywhere.

But that wasn't the important part, oh no.

The important part was how much fun could be had at all of the booths! Step up, step up! Take your chances!

Really, who would want to miss this?

"It's research," Quinn agreed a bit too eagerly. "Plus it's practically for school, right? It's not like we got drunk in your car. This is ... wholesome. Also, technically, you aren't my Puck. So I figure it's okay."

Which did not mean Quinn meant to tell Finn. She was not stupid.

"How much do I have to pay you?" she asked.

"Kisses run a dollar. Anything more, and we can negotiate price," he said, winking. "School spirit, and all that."

"No, I think I have about a dollar worth of spirit," Quinn said neatly, ignoring what his wink did to her stomach. She dropped the dollar into his jar and leaned into his booth. "Time for your end of the deal."

And now Puck had to squash down those nerves. Because really. Please. The last time he'd been weird about kissing a girl was like, fourth grade. And even if he was feeling...fluttery -- oh, god, 'fluttery' was such a chick word, he might as well just turn in his balls now and start listening to Dashboard Confessional -- it was just out of guilt. Because Quinn was his best friend's girlfriend.

That was all.

So, after what really counted as a monumental introspective battle for Puck, he leaned in to close the distance, dipping his head to kiss her. And fluttery, guilty, weird -- whatever you called it, it was making him keep it gentle and sweet, at least for the moment.

Fluttery, guilty, weird ... yeah, Quinn was right there with him. Also into keeping things gentle and sweet, because that made it that much less likely he'd try to talk her into anything that imperiled her celibacy vow.

But once she stopped thinking for a second and let herself relax, it was a really good kiss, and she realized she was making a little happy humming noise against his mouth.

He had nice lips.

And the weird thing about kissing Quinn was that it wasn't really that weird. In a way it was kind of natural, but at the same time, not in the way it was natural to kiss Santana. It wasn't normal, no -- it was still unusual. But only because of who it was, and the fact that they, in fact, did not do this every day.

Even if Puck, privately, maybe thought that they should. If there wasn't a Finn, and Santana wouldn't disembowel Quinn on sight at the idea of such a thing.

In any case, he leaned in a little more, reaching out to touch her jaw lightly. Not to add pressure, metaphorical or literal, but rather just because he wanted to.

It was weird in that this was her boyfriend's best friend and she'd known him forever, and he'd kissed just about every pretty girl in their class and some of the ones who weren't that pretty but were kind of easy, and she'd known that forever too. Which also helped make it weirdly comfortable, like that hand at her jaw. Quinn tilted her mouth up a little, increasing the pressure the tiniest bit.

And then she brought a free hand up to lightly touch the bristles on his mohawk, simply because she'd always wanted to do that.

Which was kind of nice; it was something that most girls he made out with didn't do, which just made kissing Quinn all the more memorable. Not that it wouldn't be, on its own, just because it was Quinn.

He sort of wanted to deepen the kiss -- because he was Puck, and he was seventeen, and of course he did -- even if something was making him hesitate, just a little. But he took that increase in pressure to assert some of his own, and moved to trace his finger along her jaw to her ear, and to touch her neck, just lightly.

And at this point, the whole concept of a light kiss for research had sort of flown out the metaphorical window. Half of Quinn knew she had to pull back before Puck's hormones got out of control (never mind hers; she refused to admit her own hormones might have anything to do with it): the other half wanted to keep going, to let him kiss his way down her neck, and then maybe do it again and not outside at a kissing booth for research.

And this, Quinn realized, was probably why she had never started down this road with Puck before.

"I need to pray," she whispered, when she could finally pull away.

And that -- the break of the kiss (which he hadn't planned on stopping...pretty much ever, if he had his way) plus the fact that no woman had ever uttered those four words after kissing him, were the reason for Puck's subsequent eloquence:

"...why?" he asked softly, way more softly than he really meant to.

"Because of Finn," Quinn answered, not making eye contact. "Because I made a vow. Because I know you. Because -- because I can't just kiss people like that, not while things are the way they are."

She'd kissed Bruce in about the same way, but Bruce was really just fun. A flirtation, and maybe one that could become more someday, but nothing important. Puck was real.

Quinn shifted, and, not sure what else to say, added, "I'm sorry. It was a really good kiss."

Which was, of course, part of the problem.

"I -- " Normally Puck was good at words. Producing them, anyway, if not the actual content. Right now, he wasn't, because really, he just wanted to go back to kissing her. Before, it was fun to joke about things like this, because Quinn was so uptight with Chastity Club, but wouldn't slap him or anything. Now he couldn't think of any jokes, or even make fun of her vow.

The mention of Finn was really what paused him, once it caught up to his brain. Poor, clueless, far-away Finn, who probably had no real idea what he was missing, or what he'd had.

That, and 'because I know you.' Because that said it all, didn't it?

"Sorry," he finally said, gruffly. "For, um, making you feel -- like your vow was in danger?"

"It wasn't in danger." Though if Quinn had been a few wine coolers in, or was feeling a little less cute, or they were in private, things might have been different. Because despite everything, she knew she really liked Puck, in a way she couldn't even let herself think about.

Which was another reason to back away.

She finally looked at him and gave him a tiny smile. She wanted to make things okay. Wanted to make things normal. "Hey. Now I can say I've done the most fun thing in Lima, and I wasn't even in Lima for it. It's fine. We did the research thing."

And, as in all research, there had been some unexpected results.
