Caritas: Friday Night

Jessica knew there were visitors to the island tonight, so she expected the bar to be busy. So before she opened up for the night, she repeated a mantra to herself about not biting anybody no matter how much she wanted real blood.

Tino kept edging nervously away from her for some reason.

"Nah, not really," Reno agreed, "but that'd confuse the shit outta the little Jedi around here, I think."

... Which would actually be kind of funny, wouldn't it? Something for him to think about later, maybe.

"You say that," Romeo observed, "as if confusing Jedi would be a bad thing."

"What'd be even better," Reno decided, in that imperious tone that suggested that Reno was coming up with the best idea ever which was naturally complete and utter bullcrap, "would be if I started collectin' titles, yo. Grand-high Professor Master Guru President King Reno of the Turks Esquire, PHD."

Most of which he'd forget in about three seconds.

"And your friends, of course," -- Romeo said, after a spate of laughing into his fist -- "might call you something shorter. Pookie?"

"Schnookums," Reno corrected without missing a beat. "Pookie's not sensitive enough."

"Congratulations," Romeo said, clapping Reno on the arm. "Thou art new-christened Schnookums for the rest of the weekend. I hope the new name treats thee well."

He had no idea why he'd gone all Verona there.

And in response to that, it was all Reno could do to laugh and flag Tino down.

"Tino, my man! A round of somethin' hard to celebrate my new title, yo!"

He could totally rock the Schnookums, damn it.

"And one for me as well," Romeo added, also laughing. "This round is on me. I couldn't make my friend pay for his own celebration."

"And see, this is why Romeo's my main man," Reno decided, reaching over to clap Romeo on the shoulder before pulling himself up onto a barstool. "He's such a givin' individual, yo."

Bonus points where liquor was involved, okay?

"So, how you been hangin' in there, back in Tokyo with Doji?"

"She is wonderful," Romeo emphasized, reaching out for a sip of his 'something hard.' "School isn't, but it's just school, and I can do it. And it won't last forever, anyhow."

He shook his head. "I never realized I'd meet someone where living with them is -- it's not just romance. It feels right."

In response to that, Reno gave a little crooked grin and lifted his glass toward the ceiling.

"Tell me about it, yoto! Go figure, it takes playin' mix and match with Fandom blondes to find one that fits right, but this place didn't do half bad for either of us, yo."

"It wasn't only blonds!" Romeo protested. "Brooke is brunette." And he wondered how she was, come to that.

"Fandom," he added, "is a wonderful matchmaker."

Maybe she was blonde at heart?

Whichever.

"Which sounds like a weird friggin' thing to say about an island, but shit, if it can get a guy like me to commit, then damn, it's gotta be."

"Still married?" Romeo asked, glancing at Reno's ring finger. "How is Rikku, by the way? I've been awful about keeping in touch."

Reno chuckled as he held up his hand and gave his fingers a little wiggle. The really stupid tire-tread ring was still there, yes.

"She ain't been half bad, yo. Got herself a little somethin' to keep herself occupied, zoto. Can you picture Rikku as a business owner?"

He wasn't going to tell Romeo that she had moved to the island just yet. He was warming up to that.

"Honestly, between us?" Romeo said, leaning in. "No. She's brilliant, but I never would have thought that would be where her talents take her. Business is so -- day-to-day. She's found one that suits her?"

Nore nodded, grinning practically from ear to ear. Oh, he was so proud of his little Al Bhed, yes.

"A repair shop, yo. She's callin' it 'Fixer Uppers.'"

Which was so, so silly. And so, so Rikku.

"Fixer Uppers," Romeo repeated, smiling because Reno was grinning. "I like it. That sounds like her. Is she enjoying it?"

"You better believe she is," Reno ~~not Nore wtf fingers~~ agreed, laughing a little. "I ain't had a chance to swing by to visit her there yet, but she's been real excited about it. She's got staff, and customers, and a new sign for the place and everything."

It had a lens flare. It was hideous.

"It's a little far for you to swing by," Romeo said, by way of consolation. "I'm sure she'd rather you see it when she's more settled in. I'm surprised you didn't go over break...."

Ah, Romeo. Laboring under a misconception.

"Nah, we went to Vail together on break," Reno replied, grinning a bit more. "I think there are some people workin' the spa there that wanna shake us until our heads are on backwards, yo."

No, really. They probably would if given the chance.

"And then we came back here after the week was through." His grin went sly, then. Like a fox. "You an' Doji should check out Rikku's shop while you're both on the island, zoto."

"It already has a franchise here?" No, that didn't sound right at all. Hang on. Watch Romeo recognize that smile from Reno and laugh in delight.

"She moved here! You sly dog, keeping the secret until the last moment. How is it? Is it wonderful? Is she in your apartment, or did she want her own place?"

"My apartment," Reno chuckled, after a mandatory moment taken to stick out his tongue at Romeo. "I wouldn't have it any other way, yo. Anyhow, she's makin' herself right at home already. Got fuzzy orange crap decoratin' the bathroom already, yo."

He was never going to get used to the fuzzy orange crap that was decorating the bathroom.

"Is half the medicine cabinet full of her makeup and bath ... things?" Romeo asked. "I can barely fit mine in around Dojima's these days."

"I'm afraid to look," Reno confided, kind of wide-eyed. "There's girl shit in there, yo."

Reno had never lived with a female before. It was like he was sharing a home with a member of a different species, cat, ferret, and duck aside.
