Groovy Tunes, Monday

Jonothon's first shift at the Groovy Tunes on his new schedule, and he was almost distressingly distracted for it. It was one thing to suspect that there was something frightening going on with Raven. It was another thing entirely to be proven right.

Last night's dreams had been learning experiences, unto themselves.

Clearly, this meant that the only thing to do was to...

Play music. What the bloody hell else was there to do, at least until he could contact Karla and Professor Skywalker to tell them what had gone on?

Lindsay was very interested in learning more about current music. She also had birthday money to spend. That combination lead her to the music store.

Only she had no idea where to begin looking.

"Hi," she greeted in a friendly tone as she approached. "I'm trying to get better acquainted with current music. Got any recommendations for someone from the early eighties who likes what is considered classic rock now? And by current, I mean post 1990?"

//Post-'90, hm? You'd want something... with less techno, more actual music involved,// Jono mused, nodding a greeting to her as she walked in. //You know, I believe Bon Jovi is still releasing music, as is U2... Is that somewhat like what you had in mind, luv?//

Distractions were excellent. And talking music was a wonderful sort of distraction, really.

"Actual music would be ideal," Lindsay replied, nodding. "I admit, I'm not familiar with Bon Jovi, but if that's a recommendation, I'm willing to listen. I do know who U2 is. They're sorta just getting started back home. They don't get much radio play, yet, in my time."

//You don't know Bon Jovi?//

Well, now Jonothon was a man on a mission, Linsday. See what you've started? And he could drop just about anything in order to march to the rock music to pick up a CD.

//He's got a good sound to him. Can go between loud and mellow in an instant. Definitely worth a listen, luv.//

Sometimes Lindsay liked a good mission, especially when music was involved.

"Loud and mellow, huh? Sounds a lot like some of the music I already listen to," she said, following him. "So probably something I'll like."

//That's what I like to hear,// Jono replied, offering something like a smile as he pulled a few Bon Jovi CDs from the shelf. //Of course, it's difficult to find something that I won't like, so I suppose I'm a touch biased.//

He considered the CDs in his hand for a moment before reaching to grab some U2 as well, and then nodded back toward the counter, where the stereo was located.

"I'm kinda the same way? I mean, I try to give all kinds of music a try and even end up liking most of it. Except disco." Disco sort of gave her some bad memories.

She looked toward the stereo as well. "So I'm ready to listen to whatever you have there"

//Excellent, then,// Jono replied, looking quite pleased at this revelation as he put the Bon Jovi disc into the stereo and flipped it ahead a few tracks. It's My Life seemed like a good song for the occasion.

For any occasion, really.

//Give it a listen-to, tell me what you think? If you like it, we can find more like it, naturally.//

Lindsay was tapping the counter along with the beat of the song. "He has a really good voice. Definitely fitting for rock. It helps that I can understand the lyrics, too. I like the whole "It's My Life" theme. And the guitar sounds awesome."

She was a teenager. Of course she could relate to that theme.

//I'm quite partial to th'guitar myself,// Jono agreed, twitching his fingers at his side in time with the music, working out the chords as they listened.

He'd have to play this one sometime, himself.

//Interested in more?//

"If it sounds as good as that, sure," Lindsay said, intrigued. "So, do you get to listen to anything you want on this while working?"

//Anything at all,// Jono agreed, leaning back against the counter and just letting the CD continue to play on through. //And if there's something that we don't have in,// which Jonothon didn't figure was terribly likely, as he was somewhat anal about having an amazing selection here, //we can order it in, easily enough.//

A pause, as he looked Lindsay over, thoughtfully.

//There's a discount as well, if yer anything like me and have a fondness for actually owning a copy of whatever yer fond of.//

"Listening to music and getting paid for it. Sounds like my dream job," Lindsay said thoughtfully. "And yeah, I like to own copies. Though I do admit to owning some mp3s, I actually do pay for them. I also have a vinyl collection back home since I can't bring CDs and mp3 players there."

//Vinyl!// Oh, be still, Jonothon's bio-nuclear psionic heart. //I order in vinyl almost every week. Even if most of th'population of the island wouldn't know how to take proper care of a record if their bloody lives depended on it. You can't find th'floor on my half of th'dorm room for boxes of them.//

A point which he was stupidly proud of, yes.

//It is a bit of a dream job, really. And we happen to be hiring.//

For damn near every shift ever. Except Fridays and, of course, Mondays.

"You're hiring, huh?" Lindsay considered that a moment. She already had a job, but, between those few weeks off, the holidays, and those portal trips home, she figured she could use the extra funds. "Do you need anyone on Wednesdays?"

//We actually just lost th'chap who worked our Wednesday shift,// Jono replied, pleasantly.

It was nice having somebody interested in the job who appreciated vinyl, damn it.

//If you happened to be looking for a job...//

Well, he wouldn't say no, of course.

"A job that allows me to listen to music and get paid," Lindsay repeated to herself. "Sounds excellent. Plus, I know how to properly care for vinyl."

//Yer hired, then. You can be in for this Wednesday? I'll leave you instructions for working th'till, if need be. I have a class in th'mornings on Wednesdays, but if you think you might need help getting a feel for th'place, I might be able to drop by, check up on you in th'afternoon?//

Really, Jono just wanted any excuse to come here more often.

"I'll probably be okay, but if you want to stop by, I won't stop you," Lindsay said with a small smile. "I'll try not to get lost in the rock section, at least."

If by lost, she meant distracted by all the shiny new music.

"Hey, fearless leader," Peter said, wandering into the store.

"So... did the band break up over break or something?"

He had no idea about the certain mis-sent voice mail.

Jono looked amused as hell as Peter came in, yes.

//Well, we've not got a vocalist,// he reported, //unless you can sing, or we can hassle Ino into getting onto th'stage more often. Thoughts?//

"I choose option B," Peter said. "Because we only want me singing if we hate our audience so very, very much. Do you think Ino can be bribed?"

//I shouldn't think it would be impossible,// Jono mused. //I just have no idea what in the world she'd take for a bribe, really. CDs from here, I suppose. Free run to choose whatever she'd like to sing?//

Here was where that horrible thought struck him.

//... She'll ask me to write her more happy bubblegum pop, I just know it.//

The horror!

"We'd probably draw a bigger crowd with a girl front-person, too," Peter said. "And... bubblegum pop can be fun. If you embrace its aesthetics and ignore its soullessness."

//There's nothing aesthetic about it,// Jono sniffed, putting his nose in the air. //Bubblegum and I are purely incompatible, mate.//

Really, Peter. Have you seen Jono?

"Whoa, touchy," Peter said, putting up his hands. "Maybe something... Devo as a middle ground?"

//Yes, mate. You'd look positively fetching with a red flower pot on yer head and black tights.//

And a whip?

//Th'perfect outfit for watching porn together with somebody, purely for th'snarky comments, I suppose.//

Innocent. Innocent as he ever was.

Peter boggled for a second, and then he just laughed.

"Name the time and place," he said. "Didn't know you were one for the costumes, Jono. I'll have to tell Raven about your Devo fetish."

//Honestly, I think she'd be adverse to th'whip, no matter how much I beg,// Jono replied, managing, by some miracle, to say that without cracking up.

//You'd have to do a fair bit of sweet-talking to get me to wear th'flower pot, though.//

That said, Jonothon wasn't exactly adverse to costumes. It sort of came with the territory, if you were prone to running around with an X on your belt.

Peter kept on chuckling. "Fair enough," he said. "So I take it the phones weren't going where they were supposed to be going? That... explains a lot."

//It happens around here, every now and again,// Jono replied with a shrug of his shoulders. //Nothing that I really have to worry about, of course. Unless you count th'fact that I needed to put up with messages from Professor Holmes about his Love Monkey...//

He didn't want to know what a Love Monkey was. But it made for horrifying mental images.

Peter's face properly expressed his horror.

"Ew."

//Mmm. And me unable to vomit,// Jono agreed, rolling his eyes toward the ceiling. //Makes me happier when my phone doesn't ring at all, honestly.//

It was nice to have a reason to dislike the phones beyond the usual 'I can't actually answer it.'

"You know, this suddenly makes me have a personal question," Peter said. "Not too invasive, I promise. Mind if I ask?"

Jono gave Peter a weird little sidelong look at that, but relented after a moment, shaking his head.

//Asking really can't hurt anything, I suppose. There isn't any law saying that I have to answer, at least.//

No, that was over in that meme thing.

"Just... how do you not starve?" Peter asked. "I mean, I guess it's a dumb question, but it just sort of popped in my head."

Ah, Peter. Asking the difficult questions, really.

//Possibly th'same way I still manage to bleed, without benefit of a heart to pump th'blood about,// Jono replied, trying like hell to keep his tone from going too dry, there. //And I haven't suffocated yet. Ever the accomplishment, seeing as I don't breathe.//

Poor Peter. These were probably not the ~~droids~~ answers you were looking for.

"Oh, so magic," Peter said, making a teeny bit of a face. "Well, glad you don't die. It'd suck if you did."

He even gave Jono a thumbs-up.

//... Not magic, no,// Jono replied, raising an eyebrow. //Not that I don't believe in it. I know better after living around this place. But this is more a genetic mishap gone horribly awry than anything.//

That said, he was going to stare at that thumbs-up, now.

Really, Peter?

Peter shrugged. "Yeah, I don't know," he said. "I'll talk to Ino if you want, though. I don't know if your bubblegum-phobia is against the idea entirely, but I can be a good negotiator if necessary."

//Whichever of us gets around to talking to her first, I suppose,// Jono allowed. //I think she was a little offended when I offered her backup vocals at th'beginning of all of this, I wouldn't want her to think that the only reason she was being asked was because Christian took off. She did a bloody impressive job on Bonfire Night, after all.//

"She did," Peter agreed. "Though offering it to her instead of looking for a replacements without promoting her, that way lies pain."

//Well, I'd sooner she take it than somebody I hardly know,// Jono noted. //There were a good many talented singers in Glee Club last semester, if Ino doesn't want it. But... Glee Club.//

... No offence intended, Ariel.

"Me too," Peter said. "And ditto on the Glee Club thing. Not that they're bad people. Just... Glee Club."

Really, Jono couldn't throw stones. He'd gotten the patented Ariel sad-girl-eyes until he'd cracked and joined Glee Club, too.

//Well, then... Ino it is,// he decided. //Hopefully I'll catch her soon, let her know she's been promoted. And then from there, I suppose we'll play it by ear. We're down a member, but... maybe I can shove a bass guitar at her or something, to make up for that...//

He was getting pretty ambitious, now.

"Every band with a girl bassist does turn up its awesome factor," Peter said.

Then he made a face.

"This is proof I'm not allowed to talk about this sort of crap, that sounded ridiculous."
