Devil's Nest [Friday night, after sunset]

Eric Northman didn't get nervous over club openings--he saved his nerves for important things like potentially meeting the sun, getting staked or talking with Nan Flanagan--but he was a tad...apprehensive. It would be embarrassing to throw a party and not have anyone show up.

Tiny, the enormous bouncer, was at the door waiting to check IDs, the newly hired DJ was in the booth, the lights were dimmed, the bar was staffed, the overpriced appetizers were being prepped...it was time to get started.

Eric slouched into his leather booth in the VIP section, put a vaguely bored expression on his face and waved his hand at Tiny to open the doors.

That response got a smile out of her. "Valiant effort there, Eric."

He grinned back. "So that's a no to getting you one, then?"

"No to the shot," she said. While she didn't think she had anything to worry about with him, shots with a vampire around didn't sound like a brilliant idea. "But if you wanted to get me a real drink I wouldn't argue."

"And what is the lady's preference?" he asked.

Which would immediately be committed to memory.

"Vodka tonic," she decided, and raised her eyebrows in amusement. "'The lady?'"

"Are you not a lady?" Eric replied, grinning back.

"Last I checked," she replied. "Doesn't mean I don't get to tease anyone who calls me that, though."

"Would you prefer 'wench'?" Eric asked.

Jaina made a face. "If that's the alternative, I can deal with 'lady.'"

"I'll stick with Jaina," Eric promised, handing her the drink.

"Even better," she said, accepting the drink. "So having been here a while, how are you settling in?"

"Fairly well," he said. "I go back and forth to Louisiana quite a bit to tend to my various responsibilities there--texting can only do so much--so I was away while most of the island wandered off to stand in the sun."

The tone of voice on the last part of that sentence was the same that most people would use to talk about mucking out stables.

"I don't remember much standing. Some laying, some running, one or two people may have frolicked," she said without missing a beat. "You can accomplish anything via text?"

Forgive her. Seriously, most of her texting experience was with John and that was hardly English on his end.

"I'm very concise," Eric said, nodding. "There was frolicking?"

"Not really, but it sounds better than 'people sat around and got tan,'" she admitted, taking a sip of her drink.

"I certainly had a very entertaining mental image," Eric agreed.

"You're welcome," she smirked. "It's probably not that interesting to you minus entertaining mental images."

"Sunny weather isn't exactly a draw for me," Eric replied with a chuckle. "Did you have fun at least?"

"I did," she said, sounding just a little surprised by that. "I would have gotten more done at home, but it was nice to get away and not have to worry about much for a week." Especially since it'd be the last time she would be able to do that for a while. Maybe ever.

"I've heard people say that's what vacations are for, even," Eric said teasingly.

"I have also heard that. But I thought it was just a rumor the tourism boards put out there to drum up business," she said. "Though it's more likely I just do them wrong."

"That seems more likely," Eric said, winking. "The entire tourism industry can't be wrong."

Seriously. Stop being hot. The wink also meant she had to tease back. "I'll trust you on this one," she said. "Being older and I'm sure you'd say wiser."

"Oh, very," Eric agreed, nodding. "But not in the doddering relatives that you ignore way."

"My relatives don't dodder and I couldn't ignore them if I wanted to," she said thoughtfully. "You may need a new analogy."
