Parents' Weekend Meet & Greet, The Park, Friday Afternoon

The day had dawned crisp and clear, but by the time afternoon had rolled around... it was really still kind of ridiculously warm for fall. People could probably get away with not wearing a sweater, even.

Which made rather good weather for a picnic, convenient since that was the traditional way of kicking off the Fandom High Parents' (and assorted other relatives, friends, acquaintances, or sometimes even enemies, but that was harder to fit nicely on a banner) Weekend. So there were rows of picnic tables decked out in blue and yellow, laid out with just about any sort of foodstuff one could imagine. And just in case there was any lingering doubt as to the purpose of the picnic, a glittery banner (Petra's work, naturally) adorned the registration tables:

Caroline decided to try and involve Jake in the conversation. "Tyler's family has this old cellar in the woods that his uncle tried to outfit for the full moon. And it sounds like he won't be needing help to get chained up next time."

"Maybe," Tyler shrugged, not looking forward to the upcoming full moon at all, especially not alone. "I'm just doing my best to avoid hurting anyone. I gotta say, I'd give a lot for your control, even if I'd really just rather not be a monster." He was just going to ignore that look Caroline got at the idea any of them were monsters.

"I'm right there with you, man," Jake assured him, opting to ignore Caroline's look as well. "Are you sure there's not a way to learn to control it? It takes a while for us to fully master it, so maybe it will get easier for you too."

"See?" Caroline replied pointedly, looking pleased that Jake agreed with her constant mantra of things have to improve.

Tyler just made a face at her smugness. "Yeah, it's hard to know? My uncle was the only other werewolf I knew of and he up and disappeared before I changed. And yes, Caroline, his journals seem to show improvement over time but that's not gonna get me excited about the coming moon."

"I wouldn't be either," Jake agreed, making a face. Maybe it was blunt, but he'd heard enough to know he'd gotten the better deal, weirdly enough. But then he didn't realise Tyler had killed to be what he was.

"You boys so need a lesson in positive thinking." Or at least seeming so from the outside.

"Or maybe a party to loosen things up," Tyler suggested, thinking Jake was seeming more and more uptight as they stood there.

Jake snorted. "Because we're not going to get stuffed enough this weekend. Oh hey, are you singing at the recital now?" he asked Caroline.

"Singing?" Now it was Tyler's turn to snort. "Please tell me you're doing the rainbow song."

Ooh, Caroline could kill him for that mockery in front of Jake. "I haven't decided for sure," she told them both. "But if I did it would not be that song unless you were planning to be a flying monkey!"

The longer this conversation lasted, the more Jake was wondering if maybe this had been a bad idea as his attempt of turning the conversation to something lighter left him feeling on the outside of some joke. "Some Wizard of Oz trauma I missed?"

"Yes!" Caroline huffed. "You don't even want to know," she insisted, reaching out to give Tyler a shove when it looked like he was going to open his massive mouth. "Shut up."

Tyler just laughed and tried to step out of Caroline's reach. "She just doesn't want me to tell you about her big third-grade wardrobe mal--OW! God, what are those shoes made of, steel?"

Once she'd stomped his foot hard enough to shut him up about her childhood, Caroline could smile again at Jake, who was still deserving of her smiles unlike some people. "Anyway! Let's change the subject."

Excuse Jake for smirking at the violence, but at least he was reaching out to draw her back towards him and away from Tyler. To keep him safe of the abuse. "I don't know, I might want to hear this."

Was Jake trying to get hurt? Because that would be Caroline's cue to let him share in Tyler's pain as she tried to pinch his side. "You do not! It is not a good story!"

Hey, Tyler wasn't complaining that Caroline was out of range. "You've noticed she's a terrible liar, right?"

"Uh huh," Jake agreed, crinkling his nose at her as he caught her hand to keep her from doing any more damage. "It's cute."

"It is. Once you get past all the obsessive-compulsive disorder stuff, she's kind of hilarious." OCD was a nice way of saying insane, right?

"Yeah, so we're totally not actually talking about me like I'm not right here," she told them, leaning against Jake's side to try and free her hand. "I don't care if you're both nearly stronger than me."

"Stronger," Jake corrected, smirking a little as he let go of her hand so he could wrap his arm around her waist. "What if we like talking about you? Should we go to dinner and catch up with you later?"

Yeah, he was teasing and he would die if she left him alone with this guy.

"Oh my God, you would not even dare, Jacob Black!" Caroline complained, thinking he might actually do it just to torture her with wondering what they were saying about her behind her back.

Tyler glanced between the two of them and shook his head. "I think he would, Forbes. Though now you're damn lucky Elena couldn't make it. She probably has way more dirt than I do."

Jake raised an eyebrow, but he supposed that explained the lack of girl hanging around. "That's a shame. She's not sick?"
