Arms Hotel Ballroom, Monday Evening

The hotel's staff had never worked a Darling birthday party before. By the time Juliet was done working them over and making sure everything looked right and sounded right and was almost as good as it would have been in New York, it was entirely possible they never would again. Still, the room looked amazing, so Juliet figured it was worth it.

The ballroom had been set up for a party, with a DJ booth to the side of the stage where Hannah Montana was scheduled to perform, a dance floor taking up most of the center of the room, and a few tables and chairs off to the side for wallflowers. Most of the drinks available were non-alcoholic, but there was probably some champagne around if you asked nicely or bribed the bartender. A gold -and-silver banner hung over the stage:

(And yes, there'd been some spirited discussion as to whose name went first. Alphabetical order carried the day.) A completely handwavy email had been sent out days before inviting the student body to the party; now all that was left was to wait for the guests.

If Miley was flustered and only around before and after Hannah Montana's performance, she really hoped nobody noticed.

She also hoped nobody noticed that her hair was kind of messy after the set, totally not from having worn a wig or anything. No. Totally not.

"Hannah was amazing," Juliet told Miley, after the set. "And, uh ... i think there's some hairspray in the ladies room if you want it." She lowered her voice. "Is Dave here?"

"Heeey, Miley," Jeremy greeted her with a wide grin as he wandered over, glass of champagne in hand. He probably wasn't going to give it up all evening, actually. "Glad you could make it!"

Jack had met Juliet and Jeremy... maybe once before?

But he figured he could make it the party, have a little fun and still make it back to his room to see the end of the World series. In the meantime Jack had some food and a non-alcoholic drink to enjoy as he people watched.

"Hey, man." Yeah, Jeremy had no idea what Jack's name was. However, he was a Darling, and one of the many things that meant was that he could be a pretty smooth host when he wanted to. "Enjoying yourself?"

Sov arrived dressed in the same clothes they had worn at the dance. Juliet had chosen them, so she would approve, they guessed.

They looked around the room. It was so pretty! Not that it should have been a surprise, really.

Okay, George wasn't really good at -- well. There could be a huge list of things George wasn't good at, and it would run several pages and cover plenty of subjects, but suffice it to say, "parties" would rank highly on that list.

But she was going to be here, because she kind of liked Jeremy and in a liked-liked way shut up and okay she wasn't sure she'd ever met Juliet before but that didn't mean she couldn't come to the party, did it? Because -- okay, if it did, then she'd slink out the back and pretend she had never been here.

She had found a fancy top (http://www.greatglam.com/pd-team-love.cfm#) to go with dark jeans and low heels, and she was pretty sure she was dressed wrong. Overdressed? Underdressed? Too skanky? Not skanky enough? It was like a game show. She'd discover what way she fucked up when she got a good look at the crowd.

For now, she had presents, and she was going to ... hover. That was almost mingling. More or less.

"You're George, right?" Juliet said, with a smile that didn't reveal much about what she thought of George's wardrobe. "It's so nice of you to have come!"

She'd started out pulling for Jeremy/Miley, but she was inclined to like anyone who seemed to make her brother happy

Around the middle of the evening, the DJ stopped playing and Hannah hopefully took the stage.

"Hey, y'all!" Miley Hannah (http://www.polyvore.com/new_hannah_montana_outfit/thing?id=5828339) chirped as she sauntered on stage. "I'd just like to say a huge happy birthday to my fans Jeremy and Juliet! Give it up for them, everybody!"

After the assumed cheers, she turned to her band and counted off, "A-one, two, one, two, three, go!"

And then she launched into "Let's Get Crazy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=9U2crIYoAms#t=28s)," which was followed by an assortment of pop songs both hers and covers of songs she knew the twins liked. Though she did seem to take awfully long breaks after every few songs, she also made sure to make herself available to anyone who might want a picture or autograph. She was classy that way.

True, booking a pop star to play a seventeenth birthday party was considered a very generous gift. Actually being said pop star and doing the performance was also considered fairly generous.

And yet two (http://www.polyvore.com/lord_taylor_sapphire_butterfly_pendant/thing?id=42827487) presents (http://www.louisvuitton.com/web/flash/index.jsp?direct1=cate&direct2=homme&direct3=cat10021&direct4=cat1410108&direct5=cat1410117&direct6=prod10730&langue=en_US&buy=1), meticulously wrapped in sparkle paper, appeared on the table at some point during the party, with big, colorful cards attached. And yes, the card for Jeremy had a heart near his name. Don't you judge.

And if her handwriting happened to look a lot like the handwriting on the birthday card in the pile that was signed by Hannah Montana, well, that didn't mean anything.

As Sov had somehow got the feeling that a homemade present was not was Juliet was used to, they had been quite nervous about what to buy. Eventually they had decided on a book (http://www.amazon.com/Complete-History-Costume-Fashion-Ancient/dp/0816045747/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1319485020&sr=8-4) and they put it, wrapped in silver wrappping paper, on the table.

Okay, gift shopping for Jeremy had been hard enough. Gift shopping for Juliet: harder. Things that George knew about Juliet:

1: Juliet was in a sorority;
2: Juliet had a twin brother named Jeremy;
3: There was no 3.

Fuck, now that she thought about it, Juliet was going to think they were just ugly little crabs for no fucking reason. She should add that to the card, maybe. Fuck it.

And she had gotten Jeremy a t-shirt (http://www.tshirthell.com/funny-shirts/stop-clubbing-baby-seals/) about clubbing and a melting clock (http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/lights/e7f1/) like out of Dali's painting because ... because it was strange, and cool, and hey, she liked it, but she had no idea if he'd like it or not, thus proving that she was fucking horrible at gifts.

Maybe the other people would bring better shit?

Tony had, luckily, gotten in touch with Whitney to help him find nice enough gifts for the party.

Jeremy was happy too. He thought he looked pretty dapper in his shiny new Ferragamo suit, and even if he hadn't... Well, this was their freaking birthday party, what was there not to like?

He also totally had champagne in his glass. Come on, this was a party!
