The hotel's staff had never worked a Darling birthday party before. By the time Juliet was done working them over and making sure everything looked right and sounded right and was almost as good as it would have been in New York, it was entirely possible they never would again. Still, the room looked amazing, so Juliet figured it was worth it.

The ballroom had been set up for a party, with a DJ booth to the side of the stage where Hannah Montana was scheduled to perform, a dance floor taking up most of the center of the room, and a few tables and chairs off to the side for wallflowers. Most of the drinks available were non-alcoholic, but there was probably some champagne around if you asked nicely or bribed the bartender. A gold -and-silver banner hung over the stage:

(And yes, there'd been some spirited discussion as to whose name went first. Alphabetical order carried the day.) A ~~completely handwavy~~ email had been sent out days before inviting the student body to the party; now all that was left was to wait for the guests.

"Well, it is Fandom," Miley pointed out. "It's not going to be, like, this super huge press-grabbing big thing. But at least it's probably the coolest party most people here have ever been to!"

So diplomatic, Miley. Really.

"Well, I don't know, we threw a pretty good party down at the beach, this summer..." Because Jeremy couldn't think of any parties as being cooler than Darling parties. Sorry but that just didn't happen. It was in his genes. "But that was ages ago."

He waved the thought away and smiled. "Anyway, how've you been? i think it's been a while since we've talked, sorry about that."

"Oh, no prob," she said, cheerfully dismissing it. "This fall's been really busy, you know? Dances and break and parents visiting and stuff. Plus I've been mega-busy with home drama, too."

Yes, Miley. One phone call to your brother's girlfriend and a tiny honesty fail with Caroline totally counted.

"But I'm good overall," she added brightly. "How 'bout you?"

"Same old, same old," Jeremy shrugged, lightly. "No real drama, haven't had any visitors. Me and Jules went home for the break, that was pretty fun. I can't believe that was the first time since, like, January."

"It's weird coming back after you've been home, right?" Miley sympathized. "I went home for the break too, and plus I took, like, a week off a month or so ago. Every time I come back I'm like, oh, wait, it's a little bit crazy here."

"I don't know, I guess I'm already too used to that?" he mused. "I mean, I didn't come back to it, like, raining puppy dogs or anything."

And maybe he was generally oblivious enough to not really react to Fandom's baseline weirdness anymore.

"Yeah, but there's, like, a whole new island over there," Miley said, pointing vaguely toward the nearest window. "With a sign and everything."

"Oh, yeah." Yeah, he remembered that. He hadn't been paying that much attention though. "But I figured that might as well have been there already before, you know?"

"Yeah, point," she said, shrugging. Oh, well. "So what else is up?"

"Not much," Jeremy replied with an easy little shrug of his own. "For the most part I'm just chillin'. Not doing much in particular but hey, I sorta like it like that."
