Community Center, Friday Evening

When it came to Fandom, the typical alumni mixer type events tended to include a few key elements: food, drinks, and dancing.

Tonight? Not so much. Well, there was still the food and drinks, and probably nobody would actually stop you if you decided to go ahead and get jiggy with it, but the setup didn't exactly lend itself to dancing.

The setup in question? Well, the room was made to look as if a giant slumber party were taking place. There were ample blankets and pillows, and a big movie screen set up on one side of the room in order to play appropriately-themed movies.

"Good. Especially since I seem to be better at that than you lately..." she teased, sending just a little bit of reassurance her way.

Yeah, don't get used to that good-at-taking-a-break thing. It wouldn't last long.

Tahiri noticed, and gave her an appreciative smile for it.

"How did that happen, anyhow? It's really weird. Are you sure you're really you?"

"I'm sure. I'm just... trying more," she decided. "Also being on a faster timeline means I still only take a break every several months or so, barring any life or death situations in Fandom." You know how it is.

"That's more than you used to take," Tahiri pointed out. "And you probably appreciate them more."

Hey, now, don't get crazy there. "Maybe a little," she said, almost grudgingly, because old habits died really, really hard. "Besides, I never know when things are going to get crazy again. Might as well take advantage of it while I can, right?"

"Definitely. At least I don't have to worry about you practicing what you preach," Tahiri teased. Look, she'd take her non-awkward encounters while she could, speaking of taking advantage of things. ~~Not dirty.~~ "How often do we get to . . ."

She looked around the community center.

"Watch movies and eat snacks and sleep in the same room as a lot of other people, anyway?"

"I think I'll skip the sleeping here part," she said. "Seeing as how I have a hotel room. Is this what people do at sleepovers?"

Jaina's childhood strangely had included absolutely none of those.

So had Tahiri's, thus the helpless look and shrug.

"I'm hardly an expert on it either, you know. But I might give it a try. How long do you think you'll be here?"

"Not sure. My portal leaves on Tuesday but I might squeeze in an extra day or so if nothing's exploded back home," she said. "What about you?"

[I'll read what I want into that.]

"Nothing has exploded back home lately, has it?" Look, you had to check with these things. "It's been so long since I had a break, I'm taking every last minute of it I can get, so I'll be here at least until Tuesday, too."

"Not so far. It's in one of those rare quiet periods I never trust too much," she said. And from where she was in the timeline, Jaina hated those quiet periods.

Yeah, by that point she had good reason.

"One of those periods we should have a bad feeling about?"

"I'm not sure," she said. "I'm not getting worried without reason, though. It's entirely possible I'm too cynical to realize when things can actually just be normal for a while."

Yeah, no.

Things in their galaxy. Normal for a while. Ahahahahaha.

"My first instinct," Tahiri admitted, because she did have a certain Yuuzhan Vong tendency toward paranoia, "is to say that isn't cynicism, it's just practicality."

"Yeah, I know," she sighed. "I'm trying to ignore that thought when it pops into my head."

Tahiri made a face. "Me too. It isn't the most cheerful way to look at things, is it?"

Oh, like they knew cheerful.

"Since when has cheerful factored into anything?" Seriously.

"Sometimes," Tahiri said after a moment, "I begin to think I come back here because I missed you being annoyingly logical at me."

"Don't think of it as 'annoyingly logical,' think of is as 'pragmatic,'" she advised. "I find it helps."

Tahiri grinned at her. "You got that from me, didn't you?"

Like a minute ago.

"Maybe," she grinned back. "It just sounds better."
