Community Center, Friday Evening

When it came to Fandom, the typical alumni mixer type events tended to include a few key elements: food, drinks, and dancing.

Tonight? Not so much. Well, there was still the food and drinks, and probably nobody would actually stop you if you decided to go ahead and get jiggy with it, but the setup didn't exactly lend itself to dancing.

The setup in question? Well, the room was made to look as if a giant slumber party were taking place. There were ample blankets and pillows, and a big movie screen set up on one side of the room in order to play appropriately-themed movies.

Ben looked halfway between shocked and impressed. "Really?"

"Uh huh. It was a while ago," Tahiri replied. "Back during the war, before Corran and I went to infiltrate Coruscant the first time. I'm hoping it stuck."

"That would be nice," Ben said softly. "I miss her."

"I know," Tahiri replied just as quietly. "I can't do anything to change that for you, but maybe for him . . ."

Ben leaned in to kiss her cheek. "I have better friends than I deserve," he murmured. "Thank you."

Tahiri reached out to slip her arms around his waist for a quick hug. "Don't get started with that not-deserving business, Ben Skywalker," she warned, playful but meaning it. "Or you know I'll be forced to kick you."

"And then Anakin will really wonder what's going on," Ben said teasingly.

"At this age?" Tahiri rolled her eyes. "No, not even a parade of dancing Ewoks spelling it out with banners would get through his thick skull."

Ben burst out laughing. "In his defense, I'd be distracted by the Ewoks myself."

"You weren't much less hopeless a few years ago, if I recall," Tahiri pointed out, then grinned mischievously. "Actually, I think your observational skills in that department only improved recently."

Ben's cheeks (predictably) went red. "Maybe," he admitted.

"Fortunately for you," a thoroughly incorrigible Tahiri went on, "what you occasionally lack in foresight you manage to make up for with reflexes quick enough to cover for it. Before I had to smack sense into you, too."

Ben burst out laughing. "I've missed you," he said, grinning.

"The feeling is definitely mutual, Skywalker," Tahiri replied, holding in a laugh of her own before she finally decided to just go with it and chuckle. "The younger you isn't quite as entertaining a conversationalis."

"I feel like I should stick up for me but...yeah, I really wasn't," Ben said. "Bring me a game or a pet that won't die easily and you'll have a friend for life."

"That's adorable," Tahiri said, most likely not for the first time. "And a quality I'd hate to see you now lose completely . . . so I really am glad you're going."

Ben blushed. "It doesn't seem like I'm running away, right?"

"I don't think it is. That doesn't mean it won't be taken that way by some," Tahiri warned. "I think that's inevitable. But running away implies not really thinking things through, doesn't it? That's not you. If they think that, they don't know you."

"And I don't care what those people think," Ben decided. "There are a thousand Jedi. The future of the organization doesn't rest on me, and it shouldn't. Anakin taught me that."

Tahiri quietly resolved to hunt down Anakin and give him a hug at some point this weekend, even if she never explained to him why.

"Good. He may be dumb about a lot of things, but not when it counts. And he's right," she said, her voice cracking a little. "He never got that chance, but you did. I'm glad you're taking it."

Ben reached out to hug her again. "Love you," he murmured.

"Love you too, Ben," Tahiri replied, hugging him back hard. "Even if your hair is still a hopeless cause."

Which she would say no matter what it looked like.

"It's still better than Zekk's," Ben declared.
