The Park, Monday Evening

Portals elsewhere might break, send you to the wrong planet, or leave you hanging; this one was forever faithful to its own schedule.

Sadly, for those denizens of the island who might have grown attached to their children, that meant it was time to say goodbye. The portal popped up blazing purple in the center of the park, calling to those it had taken here just a few days ago.

Time to go, time to go home, children.

Kate would freely admit that this sucked beyond belief. She'd been thrilled with this weekend when it had started, because it had taken her mind off of things that had happened. But having to say goodbye again? That was as bad as it hd been last week. Worse, even. There were no guarantees she'd ever see Dorian again.

She was already trying not to cry, and it kept her from saying anything for a moment. She just held on tightly. "And just remember that –– all across the multiverse, your parents love you."

"Your mum's absolutely right," Bod said, leaning over to kiss the boy's head. "We'll love and your parents will love you and that will never change. Give us both a hug when you get back, all right? And give your grandmother an extra big hug."

Kate blinked a lot, trying to keep the tears at bay.

"A really really big hug," she agreed. "Best hug you can. I know you give awesome hugs."

"I wiiiiiiiill," Dorian promised, arms around Kate's neck. "I will give her a hug and a kiss and the drawings we made! I will! You can count on me, Mum!"

Bod's breath hitched at that, even.

Well, Kate actually shuddered. So, he was still kind of one up on her there.

"I know, sweetie," she murmured. "I know. I know."

God, was she seriously supposed to let go of the poor kid at some point?

"Will I get to come back again?"

Sorry, Kate. Dorian knew not about your breaking heart.

... Yeeeah, Kate knew she was going to be ugly crying before this thing was over. She was already to a good start, with a few tears rolling down her cheeks.

She didn't manage to form any useful words in reply to that question. Sorry, Dorian.

"There's always a possibility," Bod said, stepping in so Kate wouldn't have to try. "But, even if you don't see us again, we'll never forget you, all right?"

Dorian nodded decisively.

"And your parents will never let you stray far from them."

"N-no," Kate agreed, shaking her head even if her voice was faltering. "They won't. They... They're always gonna keep you close, and we, we're always gonna think about you. Okay? J-just be the awesome boy you are and you'll do great."

She could barely see right now.

Bod slid an arm around Kate's waist and brought her close. That also meant he could lean down and kiss Dorian's head softly.

"You'll do great," he echoed, sighing. "Are you ready to go?"

"Yep!" Dorian reached up and kissed his mum's nose. "Don't cry, Mum. Don't cry. You will always be right hereeeeeeeee."

And he pointed to his heart. Sorry, Kate's heart.

Yep, Kate's heart was in itty bitty pieces and ugly crying was happening in sobs she was trying to keep down, oh yes. She was leaning pretty heavily against Bod, too.

"I'm sorry, Dorian," she stammered. "Mommy just really loves you. B-but... I'll be okay."

Bod was going to have to help her let go, though.

"Come on, Kate," he said, not going so far as to take Dorian from her but kissing her cheek and leaning close to her ear. "We're both going to miss him but imagine how the other you feels right now. He needs to go back so she can breathe again."

Those were some magic words. That actually helped. Kate drew in a shuddering breath, kissed the boy again, whispered she loved him, and actually moved to put him down.

The Kate that mattered more needed to stop hurting.

Bod took some time to kneel down and give Dorian a long hug then, whispering a few things of his own to his son before standing up and drawing Kate close to him again.

"I'll see you soon!" Dorian chirped, waving at both of them. "And I'll have lots of hugs and kisses ready! Be good, Mum and Dad. Or I'll make you eat spinach!"

And with that little joke, he turned to head to the portal, clapping his hands as he did.

Kate laughed a little, even if it was through tears. And she made sure to watch him and wave all the way from them to the portal, even if he didn't look back.

She was pretty sure she was holding her breath as she did.

Oh, but he did look back. Right before he stepped into the portal, he turned around and waved at both them, yelled, "I love you!" and then stepped inside, taking him away from the island.

As he did, Bod pulled Kate into a hug and tried to comfort her a little more fully now that Dorian was gone from view.

Kate really needed it. She clung to him, sobbing. Not for the first time in recent memory, which probably added to the harshness of it.

She dislike goodbyes. Goodbyes sucked, and alternative realities sucked too.

"It's all right," Bod murmured, trying to walk her away from the area to a space more private. "Shh shh shh. Come on, Kate. Let's go home. It'll be all right, I promise."

Kate let him lead her, even as she wiped at her eyes and laughed at herself for being so emotional.

"Other me better appreciate this."

"She will," Bod murmured, giving her cheek a kiss. "You're her so you know she will and you know she'll love Dorian as much as you do."

"Probably more," Kate admitted. "I mean, she gets him all the time. We've just had him for two weekends and I love him like crazy, so..."

So, she thought the love had to get stronger over time.

"I agree," he said, kissing her cheek again, "but the important thing is that you love him and he knows that. He knows. And don't give up hope on seeing him again, Kate. Don't give up."

Kate just made a noise at that, and wound her arms around his waist, sighing.

"Can we just go home now?"

She was so fucking tired.

"Absolutely," he said, keeping her close to him and whispering words of love and affection in her ear as he did. "Let's go home."

That sounded like a good plan right now.
