The Park, Monday Evening

Portals elsewhere might break, send you to the wrong planet, or leave you hanging; this one was forever faithful to its own schedule.

Sadly, for those denizens of the island who might have grown attached to their children, that meant it was time to say goodbye. The portal popped up blazing purple in the center of the park, calling to those it had taken here just a few days ago.

Time to go, time to go home, children.

"Listen to your mom," Sam agreed, nodding. "Be good. And --- "

He came very, very close to apologizing for what he'd given her right there.

"Stay close to them."

Again, Ada nodded very seriously. "I will!" Not that it was her choice or anything, but she wanted him to be happy.

"Okay, run along now, Ada," Natalie said softly. The girl let go of her legs, then waved at both of them. "Bye Mommy and Daddy! I'll see you inna bit!"

Well, she would. And then she was skipping off towards the portal.

"In a bit," Sam agreed, waving at Ada as she ran off. He had no idea if he'd ever see her again so he was taking some time to memorize her features as she skipped to the portal.

He swallowed and hoped she stayed close to her parents. They'd protect her.

Ada stopped to wave at them right before the portal, and then she was on her way across the multiverse with a, "Yaaaay portal!"

There was only silence once she was gone. Natalie glanced over at Sam, and wasn't sure what to say.

Yeah, Sam wasn't sure what to say right now either. He felt almost nauseous now and there was a mixture of relief and sadness in there as well.

"I think -- " He looked down. " -- I'm gonna go."

He was also still struggling with things.

"... Okay."

Natalie kind of wished she'd felt more surprised than she did, honestly. He'd been struggling since yesterday, and she knew it. She also wished there'd been something she could do, but she was too tired to impose in any way.

"I'll see you later."

"Yeah."

He glanced over at her once more before he got his feet moving in the direction of...somewhere. He just needed some time.

Natalie watched him walk away in silence, then took off in another direction herself.

Whatever. She'd deal with this later.
