Kitty didn't start 2013 with a hangover or anything like that. She did, however, get to start it by working. Good thing she liked her job.

That might at least make her first shift of the new year more entertaining...

The zombies were still trying to work Auld Lang Syne into the regular music.

Where Kitty and the drinks are.

"Good evening," Coulson said as he took a seat and glanced at the sign. "It would probably be a little far to make my first drink the most expensive thing you serve, wouldn't it?"

"It'd be mean, that's what it'd be," she told him with a nod.

"I thought so. I'll start with a celebratory Scotch, then. The cheapest one you have," Coulson said.

"You are the best," Kitty said, getting the drink together. "How was your New Year's?"

"Fairly uneventful," Coulson said. "No surprising declarations of love and no alien invasions. But it was a nice night anyway."

"It's a little worrying that those are your standards, but I can't disagree," she said, handing him his drink. Especially if he came from some version of her world- she knew the score on weird events.

"I just figure that spans the range of almost every possible New Year's surprise," Coulson said, adding a quick "Thank you," as he took the drink. "Anything else that might happen is between those extremes."

Kitty opened her mouth, then closed it as she thought about it. "Huh. I actually can't dispute that."

"It was a very well-considered range of options," Coulson said with a hint of pride.

"Well, go you. And really, you can apply that to just about everything," she mused. "Holidays, graduations, dates, schooldays..."

"That's what movies teach me, at the very least," Coulson said.

"Just movies? Lucky." She was maybe even a little bit jealous.

"Well, the alien invasion thing could be any given work day," Coulson said. "The surprise declarations of love are slightly less common."

"And the world just became that much sadder," Kitty said, frowning.

"Not really. Before I came here, I was happily married to my job for many years," Coulson said.

"You just used a lot of past tense," she pointed out.

"There was an amicable divorce with that job," Coulson said. "But I'm happy seeing other jobs now."

"Can I ask what caused the split?" she asked sympathetically. That's what she'd have asked if she were talking about an actual divorce, too.

"I'm going to just call it irreconcilable differences," Coulson said. Like how he needed to be dead, but he wasn't. Those two things just couldn't work together.

"Well, I'm sorry. But you've bounced back with a new job," Kitty said optimistically.

"Two new jobs, actually. I just took over as manager at MCA," Coulson said.

"Don't you live in MHA?" she checked.

She'd maybe checked who lived in the building just in case she ever ended up phasing into someone's apartment, accidentally or not. ~~#mutantproblems~~

"Until tomorrow," Coulson said. "I'll be moving my things over in the morning."

"Traitor." She didn't mean it.

"It goes against everything I believe in," Coulson joked, "but something told me it might be a good move for me."

That something was Nick Fury.

Kitty gave an exaggerated sigh. "I guess I can forgive you, then."

In case you need to get away for your poor hungover brain's sake.

There's got to be something on TV, right?

Might be getting sick, but at least it waited till after vacation!
