For anyone wondering why the zombie band was playing The Girl From Ipanema on loop... Kitty tried. She'd asked for something with beat after the third time she heard the song, and the drummer's other arm promptly fell off when they tried to play, and she just wasn't dealing with that this week.

So elevator music it was. Elevator music as played by the undead.

"I've been to a lot of political fundraisers and been subjected to some terrible house bands," Josh said, getting comfortable on a bar stool, "but this easily cracks the top five."

"They may be terrible, and kind of gross, but you gotta admit, no one else has this," Kitty pointed out.

"Yes and no," Josh replied. "I taught here for a few years last--oh god--decade."

"It's okay, last decade was only a couple years ago. A couple years and fifteen days," Kitty assured him. "What do you teach?"

"Public speaking," Josh said. "I'm thinking of a section on pick-up lines."

Mostly because he didn't know any.

"What do you think?"

"I'm thinking yes, because I only get the tacky ones and that gets tiring," she said thoughtfully. "Plus with teenagers it'd be funny."

She turned twenty four days ago.

"So they are real," Jane said, staring over at the zombies with a sort of trepidation as she skirted over to a barstool. "I kind of thought I was being hazed."

"That's the thing about this place," Kitty said, glancing at the zombies. "If you think it's hazing, it's really, really not."

"It was too much to hope for," Jane sighed, taking a seat. "They won't hurt me, though, right?"

"Nope. They're totally tame, and there's a spell on this place to keep anyone from getting hurt, so you're fine," Kitty said with a smile she hoped was reassuring. "What can I get you?"

"Um. A strawberry daiquiri?" Jane requested, like maybe she wasn't sure if they made those here. She legitimately wasn't -- they had zombies. Who knew? "So they're just like...pet zombies. Huh."

"I wouldn't call them pets," Kitty said, starting on the drink. "More like employees? Maybe volunteers?"

"Did they sign up for this?" Jane wondered. "I'm not sure 'volunteers' is fair if they're not here of their own volition."

"Not entirely sure," Kitty admitted. "They came with the place, but they seem really content as long as they have their instruments and the necessary limbs. But I go with that, because they don't get paid in money."

"But can they leave if they want to?" Jane asked, now looking a little more sympathetic. "I mean, maybe the poor things don't know what else to do."

"Considering the alternative is most likely shuffling around and eating brains, I don't think they have anything else to do," Kitty said. Seriously, people needed to stop making her question her employment of zombies.
