From the time that Kitty ran into the X-Men again and stupidly told them they could call her if they needed her, she'd been expecting them to do just that.

Sure enough, she got the call from Sage right before she left for work tonight.

And "right before she left for work" meant just that. Kitty'd thrown some clothes in a bag to bring with her just in case and still showed up a couple minutes late. Because really, it wasn't like she could say no. She didn't want to go, but she couldn't leave people in trouble either, so she was at the bar, looking up when she could catch a portal out tonight.

Despite her mood, your bartender would be happy to serve you. At least until she had to run off.

It was Tuesday and Allie hadn't talked to Kitty in a while. So stopping by the bar seemed like a good idea.

"Just one second," Kitty said, finishing up with the laptop before giving her a little smile. "Hi."

Allie didn't mind waiting. She had the whole night ahead of her with nothing planned. "Hi yourself. Quiet night?"

"God, I hope so," Kitty admitted. "I've got a last-minute trip later, I'd really rather everything stay unexploded. How are you doing?"

"I'm still sort of shocked that my mother was here to visit for two days, but other then that I'm fine." Then, because she would never not be curious about places other then Fandom, she asked "Where's the trip to?"

"Some place I've never heard of in California. A friend has a house there," she said. "Your mom was here?"

"California. On the list of places to visit."

Allie pulled out her phone, pulled up the picture she'd taken with her mother and turned it so Kitty could see. "Knocked on my door Thursday night. I almost fell over."

"Aww, that's so sweet," she said. And clarified, "The picture, not the falling over. Did you guys have a good time?"

And Kitty was just going to ignore any pangs about not seeing her dad, and stick to being happy for her friends.

"It was weird. But good. If that makes sense?" she asked. "We talked a lot. I don't think she was happy to find out what I am now. But then what parent would be?"

Awww, if Allie knew Kitty was having pangs she wouldn't have brought it up.

"I think it'd kind of have to be a shock," Kitty conceded. "And at least she got to see that you're doing okay."

"Oh yeah, I'm what we always hated. It's not what she wanted for me," Allie admitted with a shrug. "But the fact that I'm here and safe. That I have friends...It made her feel better. Especially when she heard I'm thinking about school."

"I'm glad you got that," Kitty said, smiling and meaning it.

"It was good. Something I didn't know I needed until it happened." Because even eighteen year old vampires need their mother's approval sometimes. "How about you? Any visitors?"

"Nah," she said, trying to look like she was okay with it. "I met a few people, though, which was pretty nice in itself."

And Laura needed to come back and be Kitty's best friend.

"I'm sorry. Especially if there was someone you wanted to see." Definitely something to be filed under apologies you only make in Fandom. "We mostly kept to ourselves so we didn't cross paths with a lot of people. Although we did the most awkward dinner ever with Kaidan and his friend at the Outback Friday night."

"Sounds like fun," Kitty said, though she wasn't sure 'awkward' was anyone's definition of fun. "And the more I hear about other people with this, the more I want to give the whole town a hug."

"If by fun you mean everybody at the table that could order booze did so? Then yeah," Allie said wryly. "Lots of fun. Still I'm glad it happened."

"Shouldn't you be careful saying things like that? I'm afraid those gremlin things will get ideas about comforting people."

"As long as they don't bite anyone, I'm fine with gremlin hugs," Kitty decided. Of course, she could phase. "I just feel like we could all use some cheering up."

"Oh yeah. I'm mostly okay. But I do know other people that probably aren't." Yes Kaidan, she's talking about you. "We need a distraction. Maybe the island can give us cute baby animals or something this weekend."

"Maybe. Or it's been a while since there's been a party," she mused. "I was threatening Derek with one not too long ago."

"I think the last one was the one at the hotel the weekend everyone was teenagers," Allie laughed. "So maybe it is time for another one."

"Maybe something smallish?" she said. "I don't know that I'm up for like a big Caritas thing after I get back."

"Compared to something like New Year's? Yeah, small is probably better." As if Allie had all sorts of party experience to fall back on.

"Okay, how about this," Kitty said, thinking things through with regard to how she was going to kick bad guy ass after this. "Saturday, my place. We invite a few people, get pizza and a game or two, and just chill out for a while."

"Considering my Saturday nights usually involve wandering through the woods until all hours of the morning, this sounds like a lot more fun." Someone was very easily pleased.

Clint could tell that he had a cold coming on, but he was refusing to acknowledge it. Going to see Kitty seemed like a much better idea... except she didn't look that great either. "Hey, how's it going?" he asked as he sat down on one of the stools.

"It has not been a great couple weeks," Kitty said with a sigh, but smiled at him anyway. "Better with you here."

"I do make every place I go a little bit brighter," Clint said with a grin. "Want to talk about it?"

She'd rather she didn't have to, but she wasn't about to not tell him what she was doing. "So... remember how I was worried I'd get sucked back into that whole thwarting evil thing?"

"I do," Clint said. "Is that not such a hypothetical worry anymore?"

"Nope. I got called in to help with a thing just before I came here," she said, not looking very happy about it. "I've got the first portal out to California."

"You don't seem very excited. Are you sure you want to go?" Clint asked. "Or do you think your friends won't be okay without you?"

"I'm not thrilled," Kitty admitted. "But there's at least one person I want to see, and they only called me in because they had to. My powers are unique and no one'll be expecting me. Easier to get the jump on the bad guy that way."

"And your powers keep you nice and safe." Shhh, allow him his delusions. "It sounds like a good plan to catch the bad guy by surprise."

"And if all goes well, it shouldn't take more than a day or two," she nodded. "So, it could be worse, all the way around."

As long as he didn't ask what the deal was with the bad guy. That might worry him.

Clint thought about asking if she'd text him to let him know she was all right, but that seemed kind of stalkerish, so instead, he asked, "Do you know what you're going up against?"

Sorry, Kitty.

Like he wasn't going to get updates anyway.

"Um. This guy who's been collecting mutants?" She added quickly, "He uses a telepath to do it, and telepaths can't get to my brain when I'm phased. No worries there."

Yeah, Clint didn't quite look like he was going to be worry-free. "Will you let me know how you're doing while you're gone? Text me or call me or smoke signal or whatever?" he asked, smiling softly in the hope of not coming off too weird.

Kitty smiled, phasing through the bar to take a seat next to him, because if he was worried, she wasn't going to talk to him over the counter. "Keep your phone on you. I'm horrible at smoke signals," she said. "I'll be fine."

"I'm gonna hold you to that," Clint said with a nod, reaching over to take her hand since hey, she was right there. "I'd hate to have to come out and shoot at someone for messing with you... oh, who am I kidding, I probably wouldn't mind at all."

"That's very protective of you," she teased. And while she rarely ever needed it, she appreciated the sentiment.

"It seemed like a boyfriendly offer," Clint said with a tiny shrug. "I'd say don't do anything I wouldn't do, but then you're pretty much guaranteed to get into trouble."

"Oh, I'm gonna do that anyway. It's an X-Men thing," she smiled. "But I always get out of it. It's all part of Shadowcatting."

Yes, she just verbed herself.

Up early so I'm not just spamming the flist later and also because WHY IS IT SO HARD TO GET SOME WORK UP IN HERE.
