Caritas, Sunday

Jake had no children show up for him this year, which was fine with him, really. Tinny and Des were enough work, and they were basically adults. Well, Tinny was. Jake wasn't so sure about Des.

In any case, he was so totally fine with not having any kids show up. Even if he had been pondering, lately, what a Jake and Leslie baby might look like.

It was Sparkle and Minako's fault for getting him acquainted with the whole karaoke thing in the first place. Or maybe it was the drinks' fault, whatever. Somewhere around the fifth one, it had occurred to Atton that there was a song stuck in his head, and he might feel better if he got it out of there.

So, Caritas, we hoped you liked noise.

"And it feels right this time
On his crash course with the big time
Pay no mind to the distant thunder
New Day fills his head with wonder, boy

Says it feels right this time
Turned it 'round and found the right line
“Good day to be alive, sir
Good day to be alive,” he says

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel
Was just a freight train coming your way...

Don't it feels right like this
All the pieces fall to his wish
“Suck up for that quick reward, boy
Suck up for that quick reward,” they say--

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel
Was just a freight train coming your way!

"Wait, wait," Atton said, at the end there. "Hey, my favorite's-- do you know 'One'?"

The zombies sighed. And creaked. And sighed some more from places they weren't supposed to sigh from. Of course they knew 'One'. They were zombies, not hermits.

"Okay, let's do that one," he decided. "And then maybe something from the Black album..."

It was going to be a long night.

"For democracy, any man would give his only begotten son," he muttered into the microphone, since this was live and so the actual prelude wasn't happening and that was the only part of it he remembered.

He cleared his throat, rolled his shoulders, and chugged down his drink.

"I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, wake me...
"

And so on.

Atton had come down here... sometime around opening time. That had been a little while back. An hour? Something like that, whatever.

The important thing was that he was here, and he had a drink in his hand. It was not the first.

"Another one of these?"

Atton squinted at the beer. "...You know what? Yeah, that's a great idea. Get me some... uh, what've you got that's stronger than whiskey?"
