The beach- Monday afternoon/evening

Okay, so the weather on the unofficial first day of summer could have definitely been more summery. It wasn't cold or raining, though, just not as warm as Kitty would like for a Memorial Day party. And really, at this point, the weather just needed to stop messing with her plans. It was a shorts-and-bikini-top-under-a-hoodie type of day.

But the posters had been around town for days, there were drinks and snacks set up and music playing, and there was a little portable grill set up that someone else might have to take care of because Kitty didn't really want to. Everything was set up, so hopefully people showed up.

"The grill has a fire," she pointed out. Mainly because she still needed someone to do that.

"You want people to gather around the grill?" Derek was just being difficult.

[throughaphase]

"Well, I can build a fire or I can work on the food. Or you could help me with either of those things," Kitty said. By which she meant he could do one of those things.

"I can grill." Because he had the Y chromosome.

[throughaphase]

"Great," Kitty said with a smile, and handed him the spatula thingie. "Then I'll go build a fire."

Though he'd have to find someone else to take over grill duties before brooding, because that was how this party was apparently working.

EXCUSE YOU, HE COULD GRILL AND BROOD.

"Good." There better not be vegetarian options involved in this.

Oh there were veggie burgers and he was just going to have to deal with that.

Kitty'd built a couple beach fires by now, so it didn't take her that long to get one going. At that point she came back with a "Tah and dah."

"Congratulations," Derek replied dryly, watching the meat on the grill. No he hadn't put down the veggie burgers. Deal with it.

"You're welcome," Kitty said just as dryly. "Did you even touch the veggie burger box?"

DAMN IT, KITTY. "What box."

[throughaphase]

"That one right there," Kitty said, pointing to the box.

[justlurkinghere]

"No room on the grill." That was a damn dirty lie.

[throughaphase]

"Then what's that right there?" she asked, indicating room on the grill.

[justlurkinghere]

"Do you want to grill?"

[throughaphase]

"No, but maybe I want a veggie burger."

She'd only gotten them in case someone else wanted them, but she could be difficult too.

"I'm sure you'd love one," Derek replied with a glare. Because they could play this game aaaaall day.

"Would you make me one?" Kitty asked nicely.

[justlurkinghere]

"Put one on then." He will burn it to near non-recognition.

"So why the veggie hatred?" she asked, opening the box and putting one on the grill.

[justlurkinghere]

Well, it was gross, for one.

"I don't hate it." Hate would have involved burying it in the sand.

"Because you seem pretty anti-burger here," she noted.

[justlurkinghere]

"The point of grilling is to have meat," he pointed out.

[throughaphase]

"I thought the point of grilling is to have things to grill," Kitty countered. "People grill actual vegetables, too, you know."

[justlurkinghere]

Booo, logic!

"Not veggie burgers."

[throughaphase]

"So vegetables are okay but not veggie burgers."
