The beach- Monday afternoon/evening

Okay, so the weather on the unofficial first day of summer could have definitely been more summery. It wasn't cold or raining, though, just not as warm as Kitty would like for a Memorial Day party. And really, at this point, the weather just needed to stop messing with her plans. It was a shorts-and-bikini-top-under-a-hoodie type of day.

But the posters had been around town for days, there were drinks and snacks set up and music playing, and there was a little portable grill set up that someone else might have to take care of because Kitty didn't really want to. Everything was set up, so hopefully people showed up.

Party that was going to be mostly adults? Of course Stiles was here. Fully dressed. You had to work to get these clothes off, people.

Not that you would want to.

"So, a tattoo, huh?"

Kitty had listened to radio, of course she had to ask.

"I have no idea what you're talking about." So he was just going to go with flat out lies today, it seemed.

"That bad, huh?" she asked.

"No." Yes. "If I don't acknowledge it then it's not there."

Mm, seventeen-year-old boy logic. Actually...that logic probably goes for men of all ages.

And now Derek was going to glare at Stiles from across the way. Or maybe he was just looking at him and his normal expression was pissy.

Either way, he noticed you, Stiles. And your tattoo.

Oh Stiles' Derek sense was tingling. Which was not a dirty kind of tingle at all. It was an annoying one. "What?"

Well, that was being annoyance was the primary feeling when the other person was involved.

"What," Derek replied, putting as much mockery into the word as humanly possible. "Where is it?"

"Since when do you listen to radio?" That seemed like a more important question.

"It's not warm enough for a beach party." Said the guy from a vaguely northern California town.

Or maybe it was Georgia. You never knew.

"It's still the unofficial start of summer, and dammit, beach parties are what you do," Kitty said. "Also I made up the posters on like, Saturday, so."

Hey, Derek had shown up! That was totally meaningful.

"You should start a fire."

So that he could brood near it.

"The grill has a fire," she pointed out. Mainly because she still needed someone to do that.

Look, it wasn't raining, freezing, or scorching. Éponine was just fine with that, not (as the full-length skirt and shawl would attest) that she had any frame of reference as to what ideal beach party weather should be.

Which was mostly why she was here, really: curiosity.

"Hey, you're here," Kitty smiled, coming over to her. "Want a drink or a burger or anything? I'm forcing Derek to grill."

"Yes, I saw the signs and thought I'd have a look. So you're the one responsible for all this then, including making someone else do the cooking! Is he terribly unhappy about it?" wondered Éponine, glancing in the direction of the grill. "I don't see why, if so, it doesn't seem that hard to do. Though I shouldn't mind a burger, really. Fancy, having a party anyone can attend!"

She possibly found this far too much of a novelty. Still.

"Derek's mostly unhappy about everything, but we'll get you one," Kitty told her. "And yeah, we like our public social events here. It's just kind of nice to be able to get together and have fun sometimes."

As day turned into evening, Batman made an appearance at the party.

That is to say that one second, he didn't seem to be there. The next instant, boom, standing by the barbeque. Holding a burger. And a cup of water.

Well this was new. Kitty was more than used to costumes, but she didn't often actually see them at barbecues.

"Hey," Kitty greeted him. "Welcome to the party..." And there was the universal trail-off for 'what is your name?'

"Batman," Batman said. "Kitty Pryde, manager at Caritas, right?"

He was showing off, yes.

"Yep. Guess I'm just really popular?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.

Clint knew better than to not show up to Kitty's party--although really, there was free food so she didn't need to do much to lure him in--and he was grateful he had a hoodie too. "Isn't Memorial Day supposed to be the beginning of summer?" he said. "I don't feel very summery."

"I've rationalized it," Kitty told him. "If rain on your wedding day is supposed to be good luck, then 70 on Memorial Day means a great summer."

It would probably not work out that way, no.

"Rain on your wedding day is supposed to be a good thing?" This was one of those things everyone knew but him, wasn't it? "It would be nice if it got warmer. I'm missing out on prime bikini time here."

"That's what they say, but I think it only became a thing to calm down the Bridezillas who got married in monsoons," Kitty said. "And you're only technically missing out. I have the bikini on..."
