The beach- Thursday evening/night

Kitty had had a pretty low-key holiday, but there were certain things you had to do in the name of tradition and the holiday spirit. So once it started getting dark, she headed out to the beach, figuring that was the clearest view of any fireworks on the mainland.

And then she took a seat on the sand, pulled her knees up to her chest, and waited to not be annoyed by the sound of fireworks for the first time all day. Freaking squirrels.

Growing darkness meant Allie was out and about on the island.

Catching sight of someone on the beach, she went to investigate, smiling when she recognized who it was.

"Isn't it a little late for swimming? Although I suppose it's hot enough."

"This is less for swimming, more for fireworks-watching," Kitty said, smiling up at her. "Hey there."

"Fireworks? For the holiday today?" Allie asked, dropping to sit cross-legged on the sand next to Kitty. "That's supposed to be a thing isn't it?"

"Yep. In order to properly celebrate our nation's independence, we have to blow a lot of things up," Kitty said. "But at least it's pretty."

"I don't quite get that logic. But if it makes people happy..." A boom echoed in the distance and Allie shook her head. "It's loud, but pretty?"

No, she'd never seen fireworks before.

"Yep. They're pretty symbolic of America that way, actually," Kitty grinned. "You never got these, huh?"

"Unless you count the time one of the buildings in the Fringe exploded because of a gas build-up, no," she admitted.

"I haven't met you yet," Batman noted as he sidled up silently.

Elsewhere, not meeting Batman merely meant that you weren't a criminal or were a very lucky criminal. Here it meant that he just hadn't been to a bar on your night yet.

Allie had to give him silent props for the sidling. It was impressive.

Eyebrow raised, because wow, interesting costume, she shook her head. "No, I'm pretty sure I would remember that."

"I'm Batman," Batman noted, looking out toward the sky. "Are you waiting for the fireworks, too?"

"Allison," she replied. Forget the sky, the guy in the costume had her attention for the moment. "I am. I've never seen them before."

"You'll enjoy them," Batman said. "It's entertaining if you haven't spent too much time around explosions." Or had the basic ability to experience simple joys.

"I haven't fortunately." And surprisingly she was still able to appreciate the simpler things in life. "So what do you do on the island?"

Besides sidle?

"Waiting for fireworks?" Batman asked. It was a beach. He shouldn't be able to sneak up on anyone on an open beach, but there he was, appearing behind people very suddenly.

And that would be Kitty jumping, because she just got snuck up on on an open beach.

"Figure they have to start at some point," she said, trying not to glare at the startling.

"Does Fandom do any firework of their own, or is that considered too risky, all things considered?" Batman asked.

"No idea," she admitted. "I think they might sometimes, but I haven't heard of them for today, so I figured looking to the mainland was the best bet."

"Seems reasonable," Batman said. "... You didn't bring any illegal fireworks, right?" His tone likely made it clear that he wasn't checking in hopes of a fun time blowing things up. If he wanted to do that, he had plenty of explosives in his belt.

Kitty held up both hands to show she didn't have anything with her. "I'm an upstanding citizen, sir. Also, a lazy one who'd rather watch other people blow them up elsewhere."

The funny thing about fireworks was that if you didn't really know what was going on, you might think they were gunshots. And since today just happened to not be one of Éponine's better days . . .

Well. She seemed a bit lost by the time she made her way to the beach after nightfall.

"Kitty, is that you?" she asked, sounding far too surprised. "But -- why? How did you come to be here?"

"I'm waiting for the fireworks," Kitty said, a little slowly since she wasn't sure why this was a surprise. "Hi."

"Fireworks. Of course," she said, with some effort. "Because it's a holiday, isn't it? The post office is closed, I didn't have to work. It's nice, having a holiday in the middle of the week."

A particularly loud burst of fireworks made her flinch.

"I don't think I like how loud it is, though."

"It's obnoxious, yeah. And it goes on for a while," she said sympathetically. "You okay?"

"Yes, I'm fine. Don't worry about me," Éponine said firmly, but she paused and went on in a less certain voice, staring off somewhere past Kitty. "You shouldn't be here without good reason, though. It's dangerous."

"It's okay," Kitty assured her, frowning. "No one's going to get hurt out here."
