Ah, Fandom. Jono hadn't actually been in any hurry to come back to the island after the whole 'killer carnival thing' the weekend before. But time spent in Glacia was good for getting some distance and perspective, and he was on fairly sturdy footing when he came back.

He was less thrilled about the wealth of paperwork that was still sitting here for him to do, untouched since he'd put it down the weekend before. He had to write out paycheques for his employees, and figure out who was leaving once the summer ended in earnest.

At least he could do it all to a backdrop of loud, angry music. Was there ever a bad time for loud and angry music? Ever?

Don't answer that.

Hannibal could argue with you about the volume, Jono. Fortunately, he wasn't going to; he was just going to come in and give you a slightly pained eyebrow-raise.

Not least because you really couldn't talk over that.

Speak for yourself, Hannibal. Jonothon could speak over anything. Of course, it took him a moment to realize that anyone was there, granted, but when he did, he was reaching over to adjust the volume accordingly.

//Hannibal, mate. C'mon in. Sorry about the noise, there. I suppose they called me Decibel back home for a reason.//

Yes, Jono. The screaming powers. That was why they had called you Decibel.

It would be a very one-sided conversation, Jono, unless Hannibal suddenly developed telepathy.

Which he personally would love, but many others probably wouldn't.

"What are you listening to?" Or ignoring loudly, as the case might be.

Jono tilted his head for a moment, tuning in to whatever the loud noises were for what was apparently the first time in a good hour.

//Placebo,// he relayed, once he'd placed the sound. //Post Blue. Seems like that sort of week.//

Not for any reason he could put a finger on, granted. It just did, sometimes.

Hannibal listened for a moment, then nodded. "It isn't bad. Now that I can hear it properly," he couldn't resist adding. "Paperwork?" he asked, waving at the counter as he came back to join Jono.

//Paperwork,// Jono agreed, wrinkling his nose a little as he looked down at the assortment of pay stubs and other such nonsense. //It's the end of the summer, I know I'll be losing at least one employee before next week, and I fell... somewhat behind, last weekend. For some reason.//

Hmm.

"I can't imagine why," Hannibal replied dryly. "Fortunately, I imagine your employees will understand."

//See, there's the hope,// Jono replied with a nod. //And how's your week been, mate? Classes are through and all, now?//

"For the most part," Hannibal agreed. "Although some of my students had scheduled their projects for last weekend and will have to make them up. Will you be teaching this Fall?"

//Not this time around, no,// Jono admitted, hiking his shoulders up in a halfhearted shrug. //I contemplated it, but couldn't pull together a syllabus in time. And if I can't manage that when I've got twice the time to do it hanging around Glacia, it's probably not meant to be.//

Hannibal nodded in acknowledgement. "Perhaps in Spring, then. I'll simply have to keep you up on the gossip until then."

//I am a fan of gossip,// Jono replied, clearly amused. //Comes from mostly being friends with girls my whole life, I suppose.//

Or from just being a snoop.

//I'll have to share gossip of my own right back. Keep you in the loop about what's going on in Glacia and whatnot. It's only fair.//

Hannibal chuckled. "It would be, yes. I look forward to it. What exactly do you do there, now you're not fighting a war?"

//Stand around and look pretty for the aristos,// Jono replied, rolling his eyes. //And keep an eye on veteran's affairs, I suppose. It's a big job, making certain the survivors aren't forgotten about in the wake of the war.//

Someone had to do it. Preferably someone as obsessed with redemption and moving on as Jono was, in fact.

"There is always rebuilding to be done," Hannibal noted. "Are the aristos of any use at all?" he asked curiously.

Jono would have snorted if he was able.

//Not even remotely. But I have to play nice, since they still hold so bloody much political sway. Much as I'd like to kick a few of them in the rears....//

There was a nice thought, though...

"Not a surprising reaction to those with too much power and too little consideration for others," Hannibal answered. Did he maybe have definite opinions on this? Possibly.

//And I know entirely too many of those,// Jono replied, shaking his head. //I'm getting remarkably good at keeping my boots clean, wouldn't want to soil them on some entitled aristo's arse.//

And really, who wanted to have to polish that from their boots, really?

Hannibal grimaced in sympathy. "They are everywhere, unfortunately. Eliot said at our gathering last week that apparently the one behind all of that was an old enemy of Mr. Skywalker's."

//Of course it was, wasn't it?// Jonothon sounded neither surprised, nor thrilled. //He's certainly got no shortage of those. Wish he could keep his enemies to himself, though.//

So that Jono could spend less time actively trying to kill people. Or with a tail in a dungeon. Or locked in 'detention.' Or...

"Or would have the decency to admit his mistakes and allow others theirs," Hannibal answered. Not that he was terribly surprised, either, at the depth of the hypocrisy Anakin had shown. Some people were really asking to be eaten. Eventually.

"Speaking of last week, or two weeks ago for you, I suppose, how is Raven doing?"

That first comment got a moment of consideration from Jono. Even the faintest hint of a nod. He wasn't terribly thrilled with the havoc that Anakin's enemies had wreaked upon the island's residents, more than a couple of times, now.

//Raven? Been worried about her, mate?// He hitched his shoulders up a little. //As far as I've been able to tell, she's been holding it together. Karla's tasked her with overseeing Glacia's orphanages, to make certain that the children within them are being treated humanely, after Warren and Karla went on their expedition to pick up Cora. I wouldn't be surprised if most of her energy has been going into that, lately.//

It was a big job, after all.

"I've been concerned for both of you that were affected," Hannibal corrected, "but I can see how you're doing. It's good to hear she has something to occupy her time. I've no doubt she and the children will both benefit."

Jono nodded his agreement.

//She's been concerned about the business end of it all,// he offered. //She doesn't have any experience in management, and I happen to have... you know, at least a little. So I'll be helping her with that.//

"You may reassure her that - assuming Glacia's orphanages are anything like the others I've known - if she has a modicum of common sense and will treat the children with respect, they are likely better off. The rest is in hiring the right people for the job. I'm sure you both will do well."

//I've suggested some of the people who were with me in Yllestad,// Jono replied, his voice seeming to drift away for a moment, his gaze falling to the top of his desk. //A few of the survivors. They fought to see Glacia become the best it can possibly be for everyone living there, and... you remember how I was, when I got out of there. They can't do heavy lifting work anymore. A lot of them were tradesmen, farmers and carpenters and the like, before the war.//

"And with their lungs in that condition..." Hannibal grimaced. "They're likely to be glad of the less physically vigorous work. I don't imagine Glacia has a large white-collar population."

Mercy made her way in quietly, not that he probably would have heard her over the music even if she'd come storming in. She waited till he looked up, then waved a little sadly.

[OOC: Sorry this is so very late, but wanted to make sure Mercy got to say goodbye and who knows what next week may bring!]

Aww, Mercy. Jono gave her a little nod of his head, reaching to turn the volume right down.

//Hello, luv. Is it already that time?//

Summer ended too damn quickly. He did not approve.

"Getting there," Mercy said quietly. "Just a few more days and then I'm off to ~~handwavey so i don't get jossed~~ University. But I wanted to make sure I got to say goodbye to you."

If Jonothon could have smiled, he would have been, right then.

//I'm glad you stopped by, then. University, hm? Excited?//

He would have been, had University ever been a real option for him. That one week he was attending the ESU undercover didn't count.

"Nervous, but, yeah, excited too," Mercy admitted. "My mom kind of wishes I was going to be closer to home, but I think some distance is still best. Let's them get on with their life without having to worry about how to fit me on an everyday basis."

She smiled. "And it's easier on me, too, to be on my own, I think."

//It'll be good to let you have a bit of freedom,// Jono decided with a nod. //Especially after the time you've spent here, getting comfortable in your own skin. I'd hate to see you have to change that in order to account for family.//

"I know it sounds kind of crazy," Mercy said. "There's not much that I want more than a family, but I never feel like I'm really family there, you know? So, I'll go study engineering and keep working on how and where I fit in best. Does that sound selfish?"

//It sounds,// Jono replied, //like you're doing what's best for you. And there's nothing selfish about making choices that are healthy for yourself. You're not planning on losing touch with them entirely, are you?//

He really wouldn't judge her even if she was. But then, Jonothon had a special sort of relationship with his own immediate family. It mostly involved spite.

"What? No!" She looked a little shocked. "I wouldn't do that. Besides, I think Margi, my mom, would hunt me down and drag me home if I tried to do that."

In a way, that made her feel better about their relationship, knowing that.

"But I do think we'll be a better 'family' if we keep a bit of distance - at least on my side of things."
