It wasn't Jonothon's usual day to be working at the music shop, but in fairness, Jono had been shite at actually being at work on his usual day in the first place. He'd been in need of doing something productive today, though, so he'd come downstairs, shrugged his jacket over the back of the seat he kept behind the counter, and started digging in to a new order of CDs that had just come in.

There, putting these out on the shelves would be an excellent distraction from that general feeling of off that had been gnawing at his senses for the past little while. And maybe later he could look into placing another order for guitars. Guitars always cheered him up.

Ugh, general malaise. That had to be it. He was so over it, already.

Kathy watched Mr. Starsmore putter around the store for a few minutes, realizing as she did so that she was increasing her chances of getting caught. All he needed to do was turn around in the just the right way, or have someone else come down the street at the exact wrong time and she'd be spotted. Heck, maybe that's exactly what she was hoping for, in a roundabout fashion. If someone saw her, she wouldn't be able to go in and...do what she was actually, for-reals thinking about doing.

Nothing. No squirrels, no people, and Mr. Starsmore stayed facing away from where Kathy was peeking in. His jacket was off, too, and Kathy knew she was never going to get a better chance.

Was she going to do this?

Yeah, she was going to do this.

She crept over to the door, eased it open as silently as she could, and snuck inside, ducking behind a shelf and staying low.

This was probably what Jonothon got for blasting Pearl Jam on the speakers so loud, wasn't it? He didn't hear things like, oh, people coming in through the door. And with that weird withering feeling chewing at his head the way it was, he had his shields up so high, he didn't even sense Kathy entering the building.

Which was going to be a shame, later.

As it stood, he was furrowing his eyebrows a little. Did they actually have a section for chap hop? Was that a thing that even warranted its own section?

Could the lord and all his little angels please bless Pearl Jam? Kathy would appreciate it so much.

As it was, she was staying low to the ground, below eye-level. Everything in her screamed that she should run, get the letter and get out fast before he noticed her, but people were wont to notice motion, even out of the corner of their eye. She had to be smart about this.

Why hadn't she thought to bring Sparkle along? Have him distract Jono while she made her move?

She hesitated another thirty seconds, mapping out the fastest route towards the back counter that still provided the most cover. That traced out, she began to move.

... Chap hop obviously wasn't hip-hop, at least not in the typical way. Maybe he could classify it under steampunk, or the novelty albums. There was a section free next to Steam Powered Giraffe that it might work out next to, but then, who would think to look there if they absolutely needed to hear somebody rapping about tea?

Jono's brow furrowed all the more as he turned and walked over to the section in question, turning the top from the stack of CDs he was carrying over in his hands. For a brief instant, Kathy would have been directly in his line of sight. If only he had looked up, rather than opening the CD case and trying to discern whether the cover slip would be any help at all.

This could be their sample disc or something.

Kathy froze, having about seven heart attacks in the space of a minute. She literally could not move, not even to straighten up so that if he did glance at her, she'd at least look moderately less suspicious, as opposed to being hunched over and clearly sneaking.

Oh god oh god oh god he's going to see I'm going to be arrested and expelled and I'm never going to get the mirror oh god oh god oh god

Of all of those consequences, not getting the mirror was clearly the worst.

And then, wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles, Mr. Starsmore did not look up. He didn't even pause! He just continued his turn and kept walking.

Fuck slow and steady. Kathy was going to speed the last ten or so feet to the counter and dive over it, crouching low and taking a few seconds to let her heart rate get back down to normal.

Hm. The cover slip was completely unhelpful, as it really only appeared to contain photos of gentlemen wearing monocles and sporting bushy moustaches, doing poncy aristocratic nonsense like... dressage? It involved horses, anyway. Maybe they were hunting foxes or something.

He shook his head and continued on to the Steampunk albums, shuffling a few of them to the side and--

Shania Twain didn't belong there. Hell, Jono wasn't completely convinced that she belonged in his shop at all, though he could allow that she was popular enough and there was probably a market for her music somewhere. He wrinkled his nose a little as he set the mysterious chap hop albums down on the shelf, and then turned to make his way toward...

Er...

Was she country or was she pop, these days?

Why was this his life now?

Oh. Was that what an aneurysm felt like? Kathy was pretty sure that was what an aneurysm felt like. She'd been caught, no two ways about it. Her hand was in his pocket, his letter clutched between her fingers, and suddenly Mr. Starsmore was asking what the hell she was doing here.

"I--I--" Excuses fled before panic, not that there was a possible excuse anyway, not for where she was. Cringing, she glanced upwards, expecting to see Mr. Starsmore's accusing eyes glaring down at her.

Instead, she saw...nothing? And a quick peep over the counter saw him puzzling over another CD. Was it possible that he'd been talking to...himself? Could she really be that lucky? Was--was maybe the mirror helping now? Exerting its magic to keep his distracted? Was that even possible?

Keeping a careful eye on her teacher, she finished pulling the letter out of his jacket and then slid it into her pocket. Surely, if he was just playing with her, he'd turn around now that she had the stolen item on her...

Yeah, nope. Jono was still busy lamenting that he was the sort of music shop owner who tried to keep a varied assortment of music, just in case that one person on the island who liked Shania happened to come through the door.

His brow furrowed, and he shook his head, and then he headed back towards the country section. If she didn't belong there, to hell with it. There was still something chewing at the back of his mind and he didn't have the patience to deal with properly re-shelving Shania Twain, never mind figuring out the fine intricacies of chap hop.

Yeahno. Two heart attacks in a row was pretty much Kathy's limit. As soon as Mr. Starsmore made his way to a different section, Kathy was hopping back over the counter and scuttling her way towards the door at top speed. She had what she came for and now she just wanted to be done.

And all power to her, really. Jono was just going to be over here, putting Shania back on the shelf, whatever bloody shelf, before getting back to his chap hop dilemma.

Which would keep him occupied at least until it was time for him to figure out how to classify the Tuvan throat singing he hadn't unearthed from his shipment box yet.
