Caritas- Tuesday

Kitty would have been content to hide out in New York and not think too hard about spending her weekend as a mutant revolutionary, but then her team had gone back to Breakworld. Not only had Kitty just had to deal with the Brood in space, but she wasn't really looking forward to going back to the world that had nearly killed her, so she let herself be talked out of going.

Instead she was at the bar, doing paperwork, and wearing an ugly sweater over her suit. You know what, at least it meant she technically got to wear something different for once.

Allie's sweater had actual garland on it.

And blinking lights.

Allie hated everything right now.

"Deck the fucking halls," she grumbled, sliding into a seat at the bar.

"Awww, but you look so cute," Kitty grinned.

"It's itchy."

Allie probably needed some cheese to go with that whine.

"It's festive!" she said, because she was a brat, and got out her phone.

"You wouldn't..."

Yeah, she knew she totally would.

"Already did!" Kitty said, lowering her phone after taking the picture. "I might love today after all."

Allie rolled her eyes, but did smile. "Well then I'm happy to have done my part to brighten your day."

"Thank you. Holiday aside, how are you?" Kitty asked.

"Same old," she shrugged. "I was fortunate enough to avoid this weekend's weirdness so there's no more angst to deal with then normal. How about you?"

"I was a mutant revolutionary, am missing most of Hanukkah stuff because my life is being insane, and I got thrown out an airlock the other day," Kitty said, shrugging. "What're you gonna do."

"I'd say drink, but since that looks like it's still an issue, I'm going to suggest my favorite stress release. Hitting things."

It was cheaper then therapy.

"Oh, I do. The fun part of being back on my team is that there is always an excuse to punch things," Kitty said. "Or shoot, depending on the situation."

"So what have you been shooting at recently?"

And when can Allie come along and help?

"The Brood. Parasitic aliens that implanted embryos in my friends and tried to kill me," Kitty said. "I hate them, I hate them, I hate them."

"I've never seen them, but I'll join you in the hate." She shuddered reminded of the Husks she'd seen with Kaidan. "Sounds nasty."

"They're the worst. I got infected when I was a teenager once. You pretty much have to sit around and wait for them to take you over and kill you and use your body and powers for their own," Kitty said. "There's no good there."

Allie nodded. "Definitely nasty then. I'm glad you're okay."

"Thanks," Kitty said. "We won, at least. And now I'm sure it's on to whatever the next crisis is."

"No quiet time for the holidays? Or is Santa going to get cranky?"

In two weeks, Kitty would have Allie's permission to smack her for this conversation.

"I'm Jewish, so Santa can deal," she smiled. "I don't know. I've been too busy for much of my holiday, so hopefully things will quiet down at least a little bit for Christmas. Clint hasn't been home a ton lately but he's always dealing with my stuff in my world. I'd kind of like to let him go back home for it."

"That would be nice" Allie agreed. "Does he have a lot of family back there?"

"It's just him and his brother. Which is why I like at least giving the option to spend it together," Kitty said.

"That makes sense. At least according to all the sappy Christmas movies I've been watching."

Jessica walked into the bar holding a tablet and a flashlight. "Hey, what's happening? In the Christmas spirit yet?"

"Fandom kind of forces it on you whether you like it or not," Kitty said. "Or if you're Jewish. What's with the flashlight."

"Yeah, I noticed," Jessica said, looking down at he own ugly sweater. "It's kind of pushy on humanists, too."

"Anyway, the flashlight is for readings. I've been working on a thing. In theory, it can suppress powers through light transmittance and I have to prove that it won't do anything for you right now. The scientific process."

"Huh," she said, considering that. "What do I need to do?"

"Just try not to blink when I shine it in your face. It'll take a reading as the light bounces off you or passes through you or whatever it's going to do. That should help me narrow down the wavelengths it needs to be at to hit - let alone affect - a body that isn't fully together, "Jessica said. "It'll take two seconds to do and a few days to figure out in the lab."

"Okay. Do what you need," Kitty told her.

Jessica switched her tablet on and held up the flashlight. "Smile," she said before flicking the light on. She watched the tablet for whatever kind of fancy data showed up, then turned the flashlight off after a couple seconds. "Well, I'm reasonably sure I haven't fixed you, but I have data. That's something."

"I'll take it," Kitty said. "It's not like anything else we've tried yet has worked."

"I've had some promising results on my own samples," Jessica said. "So I know it can work, at least while the light is on. And if I understand how mutants work outside of my world. And if I can find a way of making it not evil, since I know power suppression stuff really dances toward that line."

"It really does. And I'd need to be able to turn it back on," she said.

"That's why I'm going with the light idea. Turn it on and off with a switch," Jessica said. "Once I get it working, I plan on getting it installed in the jail here for the next time we have a super powerful being who screws with us and needs to actually be held in jail instead of teleporting out whenever he wants. I'm not still bitter."

"Not at all," Kitty nodded. "And hey, even if it doesn't work for me, if it can work there, that's great."

"The fun part is going to be figuring out how to take something that works on people who phase and shoot webs and make that work on elder gods, too, without harming anyone. No joke, I'm thinking about a dimmer switch," Jessica said. "But crazy science miracle cures aside, how are you holding up? Emotionally, not molecularly. You seem to be doing relatively good that way."

"I'm doing okay, mostly. I know exactly how bad this could be, and I mean, it sucks, but I can deal with it," Kitty told her. "As long as my molecules aren't pulling apart, I'm doing good."

"That is a shiny silver lining," Jessica said. "You should write a book."

"Chicken Soup for the Intangible Soul?" Kitty suggested. "Actually, that's pretty deep."

"I want a shoutout on the dedication page," Jessica demanded.

"Oh, you have definitely earned it," Kitty assured her.
