Caritas, Sunday

Would a kid man a bar with no age limit? ... Well, this one certainly would.

Of course, anyone entering Caritas today would find Jaq enthousiastically mixing up differently-colored juices and lemonades, rather than alcohol. And he had a big grin on his face for most of it, too.

Otherwise, though, same old same old at Caritas on Sunday night.

Hernando didn't need help anyway, Kaidan. He climbed trees. He could totally climb the bar stool because he had no fear of gravity anyway.

His eyes went big and round when he saw Jaq on the other side of the bar mixing drinks. He beamed at him and chirped, "Hi Jaq!"

Jaq got to do things like the adults did! That was so cool!

"Hi Hernando!" Jaq chirped back, giving the shaker another, er. Shake. "Did you want a drink?"

Hernando nodded. Then stopped quickly and gave the bottles behind Jaq a wary look before raising his eyebrows as inquiry.

Just juice, right? None of the icky stuff adults put in their juice to ruin it?

"It's good," said Jaq, who had no idea of knowing what Hernando was asking about. "Here, this is grape, smell it!"

Sorry, Hernando, you were getting a bottle shoved under your nose.

Hernando took a dutiful sniff and then nodded even more enthusiastically.

Thankfully for today Kaidan had remembered that he had hair ties in his pockets so there wasn't an amount of hair in that bottle due to the nod.

"Grape juice! Yes, please," he said

"Okay, you can have this," Jaq said, putting down the bottle and pushing it towards him. "Anything else?"

He waved enthusiastically at his wall of juice.

Hernando put his tiny hands around the bottle and beamed. Drinking in a bar! This was a great game!

He gave the wall of juice a serious look. Pineapple? he asked uncertainly.

He turned and poked Kaidan, who dutifully told him the English word. "Pine-apple?" Hernando said in English.

That was a stupid word! He knew what pine was and he knew what apples were and pineapple didn't taste of either!

"Pineapple," Jaq confirmed solemnly, nodding. "You're doing great with the Basic!"

Hernando was clearly learning, and Jaq was older than him, so he had to be encouraging.

Hernando smiled a little hesitantly. He understood the nod and the tone if not the words themselves.

He gestured from Jaq to the juices. "You?"

Were you drinking any, Jaq?

"A real bartender never drinks his own drinks," said Jaq solemnly.

That would be news to Atton.

Hernando frowned with a puzzled little look. Then he offered Jaq the bottle Jaq had handed him.

He could share. It didn't seem fair that Jaq didn't get any juice.

"No, no, that's yours," Jaq started, then realized pushing it away would be rude, so he took it, took a solemn sip, and gave it back. "There."

Hernando felt better. Jaq was not going entirely juiceless. Sharing was important.

He gestured at the other people at the bar and raised his hands with a questioning look. What were they drinking?

After a little while, Kaidan turned to Hernando. "Buddy, I need to run a small errand. You want to come with or stay here?"

It was Caritas. Literally nothing could hurt him here, except perhaps an overindulgence in sugary drinks.

Hernando looked around and then patted the bar. Stay with Jaq.

Kaidan nodded. And this is why he should never be anyone's child-minder, ever, because yup, he was about to leave a toddler at a bar, because apparently today this is where the kids were going to hang out.

"Do not go outside," he instructed, "Ok?"

Hernando's brow puckered and he gave Kaidan a 'duh' look. He didn't want to go outside. It was cold outside. His friends were in here. This is where he wanted to be.

A little reluctantly because he felt truly he should not need to say this, Kaidan, Hernando voiced, "Okay."

"Alright. I'll be back in about half an hour," Kaidan agreed. It was Sunday, he checked in with Sparkle on Sunday, and hell if he didn't need this one.
