The beach, Saturday night

The weather wasn't too bad, the holidays were over, and there were new people in town. Clearly, they needed a new meeting of the drunk and bored club!

Miguel showed up, dumped his case of decent beer in the sand, and set about making a nice big fire.

If anybody showed up, he'd be ready!

If not, he could always just drink the beer.

"What the hell?" Fenris asked, "After you told her that cats make your face explode?"

Ain't nobody sneeze like a giant half-orc sneeze.

"Maybe giving her a beer when she starts talking about the cat would shut her up? If she's drinking, she's not talking."

"If she's drinking, she's getting worse," Fjord muttered. "Next it'll be that thing she does where she thinks I don't notice her looking at my shoulders."

Or his hands.

Fenris snerked into his whiskey. "I'd almost say I'm sorry for letting her think what I let her think but we both know I'm not."

"I'd be surprised if you weren't still feeling smug about that one in a year's time," Fjord pointed out, smiling wryly.

"For awhile, anyway," Fenris smirked, and then said a little more seriously, "She doesn't seem like the type who ..gets it. A little slow, maybe, or maybe too self-absorbed. It's probably going to come back at you and that, I am sorry for. Feel free to tell her 'You'll have to talk to Fenris, I don't want to discuss it'. I'm happy to make the point that she should back off and quit making you uncomfortable as often as necessary to make it stick."

She'd talked twenty minutes about a cat to the guy who was not only allergic but didn't really understand pets. Not that Fenris understood it either, really, he didn't have a pet or anything. Also, shut up. Tickles was Peter's pet.

He smirked a little more, "Or you can feed her words back to her and say 'It's an elf thing'."

"It's a very particular elf thing," Fjord replied, smiling crookedly. "Still, I appreciate it."

Wasn't supposed to, maybe? But he did. Fenris had gone out of his way to try to get some breathing room back for Fjord, and Fjord couldn't help but but feel a little touched by that.

"I think I was the only elf around here until the new kids showed up," Fenris said, "So how would she even know? Now there's the little half-elf kid up at the school but she's not from my world. I doubt Seivarden is going to ask her about elf .. I don't even know. Mating customs?"

He rolled his eyes. "I'm an elf and not even I know what those would be if there even are any."

Little half-elf...

"Keyleth? She's from my world," Fjord offered, and here he went sounding vaguely bewildered. Now the island had people from two countries and an entirely different continent, all from Exandria. And still no explanation for any of it.

He paused, and considered Fenris.

"I don't know about mating customs, but I know whenever we're sharing a bed I end up holding my breath waiting for that inevitable moment a cold foot ends up on my leg."

Fenris nodded, "Keyleth. She's sweet. She seems to have less baggage than the half-elves in my world usually carry." And he would absolutely stab anyone here who tried to hand her any, yes.

He barked a laugh back at Fjord. "I sincerely doubt that's one of them if we have any! You're just warm, is all. How else am I supposed to warm my feet up? And besides, I'm usually asleep."

And he liked making Fjord grumble.

Totally lying about the sleep part, too.

"Yeah," Fjord snorted, shaking his head, smirking, and reaching for one of his shitty beers, "I'm sure you are."

He was not. Not for a second.

"I can't be blamed for what happens when I'm asleep," Fenris said loftily, "anymore than you can be blamed for when you roll over and half crush me."

That rarely happened. Far, far less often than cold feet on a calf did.

"At least you're only half crushed. Your foot is all cold, my friend."

Those two things didn't even compare.

"Keeps you from overheating," Fenris nodded as if that were true.

This was a ridiculous argument and they weren't even drunk yet. He felt a little sorry for anyone listening in. Not too sorry, though. If they were listening in, they deserved what they heard.

"My hero," Fjord muttered dryly, rolling his eyes.

"Mutual heroes," Fenris smirked, "Isn't that just cute."

"Yeah, we're fuckin' adorable." Fjord took another swig of his beer. Smirking the whole time. "Drink your soda, Fenris."

Fenris snickered and drank his wine cooler, "Better than drinking your crappy beer."

After a minute, he offered, "I like Beau. Let's keep her."

"Let's keep her," Fjord agreed, smiling crookedly. "She made a good impression on you, did she?"

Don't tell Beau that, right?

"She's honest, cynical, and sarcastic," Fenris noted. A beat, "Yeah." Don't tell Beau. He had a reputation to maintain, here.

"She's good people," Fjord decided, nodding. "Little rough around the edges. Little bad at people. But one of the good ones."

... Possibly better than he was.

"Are any of us good at people? People generally suck," Fenris noted dryly.

Hey now, Fjord happened to be excellent at people!

... Excellent at behaving around them, anyway. Understanding their deeper motives, not so much.

He just shrugged and smiled wryly.

"Hell if I know."

Schmoozing. Fjord was good at schmoozing. Not so good at people.

"Most people on the island seem.. nice enough," he added hesitantly.

Still didn't trust that.

"Yeah... Most of 'em," Fjord replied, frowning a little, himself.

There were a few who were less so. But that went without saying. Everywhere.

"Are other people bothering you?" Fenris asked with a small frown.
