The Devil's Nest [Friday night]

It was cold, dark, and threatening to snow, which was Eric's favorite kind of weather, which was why he was in an excellent mood as he wandered down to the Devil's Nest to make sure Tiny was manning the bar to his satisfaction.

The new DJ (it was always a new DJ) looked panicked as Eric came in, stammering something about equipment malfunctions and how very sorry he was before fleeing into the night, leaving the bar listening to "If You Like Piña Coladas" --and only that song--at a volume that was just too loud to be ignorable.

"If you make piña coladas a special tonight, I will snap your neck," Eric told Tiny flatly before disappearing to his normal seat in the VIP area.

The Devil's Nest was open. And verrrrry tired of walks in the rain already.

"Is this attitude typical of Sith when you come from?" Jaina had to ask.

"What, the knowledge that people are idiots? Definitely," Lana said dryly. "Although nobody ever thinks that applies to them. The practicality? That depends upon the Sith."

"This is new for me," Jaina admitted. "I'm more used to either subtle Sithly backstabbing or blatant 'Rarr, I'll kill you just to further myself for some reason.'"

The latter was preferable.

"Oh, there are still plenty of them, too." Lana shrugged. "But I don't think they're unique to the Sith."

"Politicians?"

She was married to one. But one who made sense.

"And business people," Lana added. She'd seen plenty of them growing up. "Some of them are every bit as cutthroat as the Sith."

She eyed Jaina. "I'm Lana Beniko, by the way."

"Jaina Solo," she said, and added, "I'm Anakin's granddaughter."

In case that gave any kind of context. She really wasn't sure.

"Ah - one of those awkward time things, is it?" Lana asked. "I'm in his class this semester. I have to say, I thought Diplomacy would be a lot more negotiating and a lot less shooting."

"Not the way he does it." And was Jaina ever going to wonder what it was like for Anakin to be teaching a Sith. "Not the way it seems to go in our galaxy, either."

"True enough," Lana allowed. "Not much seems to have changed over the years in that respect, unfortunately."

She shrugged. "There's something to be said for negotiating from a point of strength, I won't deny that. But if there's no intelligence to go with the strength, everything falls apart eventually."

"Intelligence doesn't always save you either," Jaina pointed out. "Balance, and all."

"Balance," Lana agreed. "Be strong enough to get what you need, and smart enough to accomplish what you want to with it."

That was probably not what the Jedi meant about balance.

"Definitely not a Jedi," she confirmed.

"Definitely not," Lana agreed. "Why, what would a Jedi say?"

She was honestly curious.

"Probably be smart enough to know what has to be done, and strong enough to get through it." At least in her experience.

Lana thought about it. "So, the same thing, but with a different focus."
