The Devil's Nest [Friday night]

It was cold, dark, and threatening to snow, which was Eric's favorite kind of weather, which was why he was in an excellent mood as he wandered down to the Devil's Nest to make sure Tiny was manning the bar to his satisfaction.

The new DJ (it was always a new DJ) looked panicked as Eric came in, stammering something about equipment malfunctions and how very sorry he was before fleeing into the night, leaving the bar listening to "If You Like Piña Coladas" --and only that song--at a volume that was just too loud to be ignorable.

"If you make piña coladas a special tonight, I will snap your neck," Eric told Tiny flatly before disappearing to his normal seat in the VIP area.

The Devil's Nest was open. And verrrrry tired of walks in the rain already.

"In that case, I'm pleased to have helped," Lana said. "I didn't think I'd seen you around. You live elsewhere?"

"Yeah, after graduating I went back home," Cade said. "I have my own ship and crew now."

Was he bragging? He was totally bragging.

"Let me guess." Lana grinned. "Smuggler?" It went with the scruff and attitude.

"Is that better than pirate?" Cade asked.

"Oh, a pirate?" Lana thought about it. "Depends who you're attacking, I suppose. And how good you are at it."

"Very, very good at it," Cade said, smirking.

"Are you?" Lana grinned. "What routes do you work? Come to that, when? I seem to be from much earlier than most people here."

"In that case, I'm waaaay ahead of you," Cade said, pointing at Ben and Ender. "Those guys? Are my grandparents. You know, eventually."

"That is so strange," Lana said. "I don't know what I'd do if I met my own grandparents, but it's got to be awkward."

"It was even worse meeting that one," Cade said, pointing to Anakin. "Do you know how vain he got about meeting a great-great grandson? He doesn't want to admit he's way past pushing 40."

"Hence the buying things on his tab?" Lana asked with a grin. "Are you related to everyone here, then? Well, except for me. And probably Vette and Hera."

"Not everyone," Cade said, "but a good chunk. Atton's just a friend, and so's Sia."

Well, Sia was a cousin, but he hadn't really dwelled too much on that.

"I've met...Oh, both of them," Lana said, after thinking about it. "Had to promise Master Rand I wouldn't eat the world."

"...that some kinda metaphor I'm not getting?" Cade finally asked.

Lana laughed. "I have no idea. I just told him a world would give me indigestion, and he seemed fine with that. Give me good nerf steak instead of a world any day."

"You'd have to work up to a world, anyway," Cade said. "Start with a city, maybe?"

"A small one, maybe," Lana said thoughtfully. "Just for a test."

"And then you just...gnaw on a building or something," Cade said. "Seems pretty karking weird."

"Mm. Yes, I think I'll just have to give up on the world eating. Oh, well." Lana shrugged.

"Maybe taking up bowling instead," Cade offered.

"What's bowling?" Lana asked.

"Really weird Earth sport," Cade said. "You throw a rock at some sticks and wear someone else's shoes. But there's beer."

"Why would you want to wear someone else's shoes?" The rest could be good practice for aiming, but really, the shoes were going to be a sticking point.

"I have absolutely no idea," Cade admitted. "They're cool colors, though. I don't know why you wouldn't just buy 'em."

"Tradition?" Lana guessed. "A lot of ridiculous things come down to tradition."
