The Devil's Nest [Friday night]

It was cold, dark, and threatening to snow, which was Eric's favorite kind of weather, which was why he was in an excellent mood as he wandered down to the Devil's Nest to make sure Tiny was manning the bar to his satisfaction.

The new DJ (it was always a new DJ) looked panicked as Eric came in, stammering something about equipment malfunctions and how very sorry he was before fleeing into the night, leaving the bar listening to "If You Like Piña Coladas" --and only that song--at a volume that was just too loud to be ignorable.

"If you make piña coladas a special tonight, I will snap your neck," Eric told Tiny flatly before disappearing to his normal seat in the VIP area.

The Devil's Nest was open. And verrrrry tired of walks in the rain already.

Octavia made a face, and still somehow ended up saying, "Pink is fine. It can't be worse than Cheerwine."

Which she still considered a betrayal, Magnus.

"What's in Cheerwine?" Eric asked as Tiny pushed a pink bottle of Pepsi across the counter.

Enjoy the flavor of strawberry milk soda, Octavia!

"I have no idea, I didn't ask, but it was disgusting."

Of course, she was eyeing this bottle warily too, as she picked it up. She'd run into Pepsi before, but it had never looked like that before. The careful little sniff at the opening of the bottle didn't seem to fill her with confidence, either.

But, whatever. It was only a drink. So she went for it, with a big gulp.

There were... a couple of faces made immediately afterwards. "What is that?"

"No idea," Eric said. "I made Tiny drink it. Strawberry milk, I think. But fizzy?"

"'Strawberry milk' is a thing?"

Would the wonders never cease?

No, wait, she definitely looked vaguely offended by the idea.

"What is with this time's obsession with not letting things taste of themselves?"

"I have no idea," Eric admitted, "but it is very, very annoying."

"Right?" Octavia replied, though a little less emphatically. As if she'd caught herself expressing too many emotions at a stranger.

She tried another sip of the drink but no, still questionable "Sometimes it's things like this," she said, dryly, "that make me less and less surprised that my world went to shit around this time."

"You're from the future?" Eric asked, eyes lighting up.

Octavia nodded, choosing not to comment on his obvious interest.

"I was born in 2132," she said. "Up on a space station called the Ark."

"I was born way, way before then," Eric said. "So...we end up totally fucking this place up? I kinda see that coming."

"Nuclear apocalypse," Octavia drawled, eyeing the strawberry milk monstrosity like it could be somehow partly to blame. Then she looked up at him again. "Some people survive up in space, some people survive down on the ground. But not many."

"I've been to space before," Eric totally bragged. "I have a friend who's an empress." He pointed to Jaina. "Right over there, actually."

The bragging was lost on a person who was from space (and didn't particularly want to go back). But, the other bit had her curious enough to glance over, towards Jaina.

"The short one?" she checked. "Empress of what?"

"...the Empire," Eric said, then pursed his lips together. "That's not helpful. Um, a big chunk of her galaxy? Lot of planets and moons and...comets and crap, I guess."

"Sounds like a lot," Octavia replied, on the dry side, but only a little. "Is she a good empress?"

Something of a loaded question. Octavia's relationship with leadership was a complicated one.

"I think so," Eric said. "She's a pretty reasonable person most of the time but...she's not the boss of me."

Very few people were the boss of Eric.

Octavia had been around him for all of ten minutes and already that was not a surprise in the sligtest.

The slight eye brow raise was a given. "Is anyone?"

"The queen of Louisiana," Eric said. "Vampire hierarchy thing. She'd snap my neck and not even really notice."

Octavia took this information, and sort of just let it sit there for a bit. While she watched him.

Then she said, "Good." Just that one, even word. Almost light.

"It's good that she could snap my neck?" Eric asked.

"You seem big and powerful," Octavia replied, shrugging. And not seeming apologetic in the slightest.

"It's good there's someone above you, too."

"For now," Eric said blandly. "Maybe I want to take over."

He didn't. Too much politics.

"Maybe you do," Octavia replied with the ease of someone who'd already seen her share of shifts in power, and the unstable situations that went with them. "But until then, she's there to potentially snap your neck."
