The Devil's Nest, Tuesday Night

It was Tuesday, and the Devil was done sleeping off the weekend. It had been an inspiring one, especially near the end, as one could tell by the music flowing from his piano right now.

Well, maybe it had been that, and 'googling how to make anaemic pop palatable'.

Either way, you could kind of tell what he was playing if you squinted.

"Happy to," Duke said with a nod. "Just . . . maybe don't wait a week to tell me I'm being an idiot, next time, yeah?"

"Next time I ask you questions about something you said, maybe don't segue onto yoga," Lucifer countered, though it was with a decidedly less prickly, almost amused tone, this time.

"Note taken." Duke nodded and sipped his drink. "So. Apparently there's a man in my hometown who drives people violently insane whenever he plays music. Or -- there was, he's currently at sea with three escaped patients from a mental institution."

"This sounds like the plot of a horror movie," Lucifer editorialized.

Duke huffed a laugh. "My entire life sounds like a horror movie."

"No, I believe you've got a sizable chunk of pirate film in there somewhere," Lucifer pointed out. "What the bloody hell - if you'll pardon me - happened?"

"Horror movie about pirates?" Duke suggested. "Don't know the beginning of the story, but Tavi and I were hanging out on the boat when Nathan showed up and tried to kill me. Turns out, he'd been trying to track this guy down and got a brainful of crazy-making piano. I helped his new partner track the guy down to his family boat. Apparently, his wife had brain damage from a car accident, and he was using his music to, like . . . transfer her damage to other people so she'd be okay."

"Well, that's an oddly specific and horrifying way of saying I love you to someone," Lucifer said, though he did not sound particularly horrified, exactly.

Blame being the Devil and all.

"Backfired on him, anyway. The doc who runs the mental hospital got a brainful and kidnapped the guy so he could dissect him and learn his secrets."

"And now they're all going on some kind of mad joy-ride?" Lucifer checked.

"Yup." Duke shrugged. "I think the theory is that if everyone on the boat is crazy, there's no one to transfer the crazy to. So they all just get to be cured."

"I suppose that makes sense, in some completely insane kind of way," Lucifer said, head tilting. "Well, at least you don't look grievously injured? I hope Nathan at least walked out with a few blows to his pride."

Fun with being throttled -- and just generally healing quickly.

"Well, he came back to himself chained to a post with a greasy rag stuffed in his mouth, so I'd say he did."

"Effective," Lucifer said, grinning.

"He also got tasered. But I don't think he remembers that part."

"The tied up dirty rag thing tends to stick with them longer," Lucifer promised.

Just don't ask.

"Though doesn't something like this happen every time you go back there? Is the Maine shellfish that tempting?"

Duke sighed. "It's . . . home. People I care about are up there. And -- trust me, I know how this sounds, but. I promised my dad I'd go back when the troubles came back. Right before he died."

Lucifer frowned. "What, so you could resume the family murder spree?"

"Probably?" Duke shrugged. "I said I knew how it sounded."

Look, he had issues, okay? This was not news.

"So just to take a moment," Lucifer said, squinting at him, "But you do know you can tell your old man to take a long hike off a very short pier even if he's deceased, right? The whole dead bit actually makes it easier, it's not like he can argue with you."

[ ahahaha i was like 'funny place to drop, but sure!' ]

Duke scoffed. "Of course I do."

And yet he wouldn't.

"I keep my promises, okay? I don't do a lot of things right, but I do that."

"Normally, I would commend you for that," Lucifer said, eyeing him, "But in this case, that is completely bloody mad."

"It's not like I'm actually going to carry on his serial killer legacy," Duke pointed out. "Besides . . . Nathan might hate me right now, but . . . I don't hate him. And he's definitely stupid enough to run face first into a trouble and get himself killed."

Multiple times.

"No, you're just going to strip down, rub yourself in bacon, pop an apple in your mouth and throw yourself at the whole serial killing crazy super power town, repeatedly," Lucifer said, eyeing him.

"At least I can tell when something's trying to hurt me. Nathan won't even know he's been shot unless you tell him."
