The Devil's Nest, Tuesday Night

It was Tuesday, and the Devil was done sleeping off the weekend. It had been an inspiring one, especially near the end, as one could tell by the music flowing from his piano right now.

Well, maybe it had been that, and 'googling how to make anaemic pop palatable'.

Either way, you could kind of tell what he was playing if you squinted.

What had happened with Octavia since the return from Haven yesterday was best described as a crash. Should've expected it, probably: between meeting Claire and solving a trouble and just being in Haven, it'd been a high-stress weekend. Once she had the space to relax, a total shutdown of everything wasn't much of a surprise.

Except that Octavia had had so little time in which to de-stress over the past several years that she was unused to the process. The exhaustion annoyed her, and felt like a failure. Her body didn't care, though. She'd spent most of the beginning of the week asleep, or close to it.

This was the first time she'd made it off the boat. She needed to check in on Lucifer and his odd phone behavior, but first? She got herself a drink.

This brandy felt earned.

"She lives," Duke teased, coming up to gently bump her with his shoulder. "Sleep well?"

They hadn't while they were in Haven. For a number of reasons.

Haven was terrible for sleep, this was true. Octavia made a non-committal little noise. Kind of a huff. "Enough to make it here, anyway."

She'd been sleeping for the most of two days, she hadn't even taken as much time to rest even when she'd been poisoned.

"We had a rough weekend," Duke said. "You needed time to recover. It's no big deal."

Octavia's repeated little huff said she didn't agree. But instead of saying so, she took a sip from her glass.

And glanced towards the piano.

Her voice was mild. "Have you talked to Lucifer?"

Seivarden caught Lucifer at the bar, instead of draping herself over the piano as usual, mostly because that was where he was when she arrived.

"Good weekend?"

She hoped so, since Lucifer had turned off his phone on Saturday. Unless that was just being tired of texting about weddings.

Never leave your phone on when you're having a meltdown chasing criminals, Seivarden, it was a simple but useful piece of advice.

"A delightful one," Lucifer agreed, grinning into his drink. "I was happily entertained by a group of college seniors, I can't complain."

Seivarden grinned. "Good to hear."

She ordered a whisky from Tiny.

"And thank you for mentioning the bridezilla thing. Now a lot of the wedding orders make a lot more sense."

Lucifer made an amused noise. "Did you get swamped by wedding orders this week?"

"No, but I get them now and then, and often one of them seems a bit obsessed. I never realised it was the bride."

She made a gesture with her hand.

"At least being picky about flowers for a party makes more sense than trying to arrange one in a couple of hours. Summer tried to explain it to me though and I think I get it now."

"I spent my weekend within the hallowed walls of a sorority, might as well get inspired," Lucifer said idly.

Duke still didn't know he'd managed to set Lucifer off. "Sounds like fun. You know that song's 22 years old, right?"

Duke's ignorance was not going to last long now the shock had worn off, no worries.

"Well if you're experiencing something you don't like around here, feel free to cross the street to inflict your judgment on our competitors," Lucifer said, reaching for a glass.

That was a whole lot sharper than their usual banter, yeah. Duke frowned faintly.

"Would've thought a weekend at a sorority would have relaxed you."

Lucifer seemed rather . . . wound up.

Octavia considered coming to the piano. But, no. She would have preferred to not do this here at all but, well, here she was now, having slept through the time she could've come see him at his house, instead. So. "Hey, stranger," she rasped, catching him on one of his visits to the bar.

Joking? Like Claire had learned over the weekend, it was nearly impossible to tell.

... No, that was a big word. Less snappish, though.

"Octavia," he greeted lightly. "I take it Tiny's taken care of you?"

Octavia raised her glass a little bit in confirmation.

Then lowered it again. "How was your weekend?"

"It involved waking up in a sorority house on Sunday, so I can't complain," Lucifer said. "Took me two showers to get all the whipped cream off, though."
