The Devil's Nest, Tuesday Night

It was Tuesday, and the Devil was done sleeping off the weekend. It had been an inspiring one, especially near the end, as one could tell by the music flowing from his piano right now.

Well, maybe it had been that, and 'googling how to make anaemic pop palatable'.

Either way, you could kind of tell what he was playing if you squinted.

Was Lucifer relaxed after talking to Duke?

... No, that was a big word. Less snappish, though.

"Octavia," he greeted lightly. "I take it Tiny's taken care of you?"

Octavia raised her glass a little bit in confirmation.

Then lowered it again. "How was your weekend?"

"It involved waking up in a sorority house on Sunday, so I can't complain," Lucifer said. "Took me two showers to get all the whipped cream off, though."

"Sounds like fun."

That was way too dry to be even a little bit sincere.

Octavia took a sip while eyeing him.

"Do I have something on my face?" Lucifer asked, squinting back at her.

"Heard Duke wasn't funny," Octavia rasped.

That was on way to get on that subject, sure.

Lucifer sighed. "Yes, I talked to him about that. We agreed not to spoil the mood any further."

She definitely would have had an easier time at his house.

Octavia had already been regretting coming here tonight before even talking to him, so that tracked.

"Uh huh," she drawled.

"I'll just... go refill my drink then, since that's sorted," Lucifer said.

Octavia's head tilted in a way that signaled she was about to disagree about how sorted anything was.

"Why does being mad at him turn into you hanging up on me?"

Damn it.

"I just assumed he was saying something that he now says he wasn't saying," Lucifer said, glancing briefly to the bottle of whiskey further down the bar: his escape, so close, yet so out of reach.

"Which was what?"

Oh, for the love of--

Lucifer sighed, rolled his eyes to the ceiling, and answered, "That he was feeling I was either coercing or manipulating the both of you into sexually charged situations against what you would otherwise want to be doing with yourselves." Beat. "Which I have absolutely zero interest in doing."

"Which I know," Octavia replied. "And you know I know that."

Maybe it was just how exhausting her weekend had been, but this was all starting to seem... very stupid, to her.

It was almost as if she was dating a man who didn't always think about what he said and friends with a deeply irrational man with some very big red sore spots someone had set fire to roughly a year ago to the date.

"I certainly thought so, yes," Lucifer said. A pause. "But it wouldn't be the first time I turned out to be utterly wrong about that."

Octavia's sigh was heavy.

"You could have just talked to me."

"I was planning to eventually, I just got preoccupied," said Lucifer.

By which he meant he had fully planned to screw (and terrify) away those bad feelings until they were safely ~~in the vault with all the others just screaming to get out~~ in the rearview mirror.

Octavia's expression turned a little dry again. "No, you chose screwing girls over talking to me when you had the chance."

She could put two and two together, Lucifer, come on.

"Ergo, preoccupied," Lucifer said. "It's not like I'm ever going to see them again."

Octavia looked away with a little shake of her head, mostly for her own benefit.

God, she was tired.

"Fine."

"Are you upset I hung up?" Lucifer asked, frowning.

"I'm not upset that you hung up, though that was a bullshit move, too," Octavia told him evenly, without looking up. "I'm upset to find out why."

And it was not the part about the sorority girls.

"Right."

Well, that was his emotional comprehension exhausted for the day.

Octavia let the silence go on for a brief moment. Then she sighed again - a shorter, huffier one.

"You got upset with Duke, and that's fine," she said, her tone carefully flat. "But you didn't have to lump me in with him. We're together, but we're not one person."

"My understanding is that human couples do tend to act that way when it comes to this particular subject," Lucifer pointed out. "Well, unless one of them's cheating, but then it's hardly my fault."
