It had been a normal, peaceful morning that was so early it was practically the night before still. If one wanted to be specific. Or if they were still constrained by the tyrant of time.

Then a piercing noise sounded throughout the building as a fire alarm went off.

Because why get a good night's sleep when you could be dragged out of bed to wait on the tiny, under-worked Fandom Fire Department to come make sure everything was fine?

Sorry, Bucky. They left for those sweet expat waters.

"Barnes," Danny said, trying to think of more than just that and failing. But now he had a face to the name at least.

And Bucky preferred it that way. He already knew too much. "That's me," he said, with a tiny nod. "You the new manager?"

Or just a nosey neighbor?

"New manager," Danny said, giving him a once over before offering a hand. "Danny Williams."

Bucky put a lot of effort into looking as unremarkable and non-threatening as a super soldier who wouldn't show his bare arms and hands could.

He was also once more glad the metal arm was on the left as he reached out with his right hand too shake Danny's. "James Barnes." Well, as the manager, Danny would already know that much anyway. "Nice to meetcha."

"You from New York?"

Said with the most pronounced New Jersey accent possible. As one does.

... God, did that jostle some long-buried memories. This next thing came out practically on its own, along with Bucky's little eyebrow raise.

"Brooklyn. You from Jersey?"

Said with the tone of someone who already knew he was, yes.

Danny snorted, looking away. "Yeah, yeah. Weird collection of New Yorkers we got here."

And him, the lone New Jerseyite.

"Always gotta have a few, I guess," Bucky offered with a little shrug.

He was kind of keeping at a distance from the other New Yorkers these days, let's be real.

"Usually loud enough to make up for the small numbers," Danny replied dryly. Like New Jersey wasn't just as bad.

"Uh huh," Bucky hummed in vague response.

Look, under the circumstances, he could get away with fading out a conversation with the 'I'm tired' card, right?

Well, he'd only just met Danny, so he could easily make that mistake, yes.

"And their incorrect opinions on what state's better," Danny added, mostly to see any kind of reaction.

Bucky managed to dig up a fairly convincing snort.

"Nothing incorrect about 'em, Jersey boy."

"Ehhh," Danny replied like he was politely, but firmly disagreeing.

Bucky just gave that a shrug.

Like Danny was entitled to his own wrong opinion.
