It had been a normal, peaceful morning that was so early it was practically the night before still. If one wanted to be specific. Or if they were still constrained by the tyrant of time.

Then a piercing noise sounded throughout the building as a fire alarm went off.

Because why get a good night's sleep when you could be dragged out of bed to wait on the tiny, under-worked Fandom Fire Department to come make sure everything was fine?

Jesse made a faintly amused noise. "The small town mindset?"

Rey paused, and said, "Thanks to alternate dimensions there are people here that aren't alive or have never existed back home."

So yeah.

"Sounds like a useful teaching tool."

Yeah, Jesse had figured out last week that pretending like any of this really threw her didn't really fly.

"It really is," Rey said, managing a little smile even when she was up at whatever hour this was. "It also doesn't hurt that this place is okay once you settle in."

"It's been fine to me so far, other than kidnapping me," Jesse agreed. "Well, and maybe the cheese panda..."

"No, that one's usually a surprise," Rey confirmed. "Are you settling in okay?"

"I can't reach home, but I have an apartment and a job," Jesse said, "That's more security than I've had in-- a while."

"And not being able to reach home is a pretty common problem, and it usually settles itself eventually," Rey told her.

"I'm just hoping I'm not missing anything important," Jesse admitted. "My brother is-- in the hospital."

"Oh," Rey said, looking alarmed. "I'm sorry. Being here must be really hard."

"I think time's on pause back home?" Jesse said slowly. "I'm just not sure, and that worries me."

[thatwaslucky]

"I bet. Have you checked with Portalocity on things yet?" It seemed a lot of people found out about them pretty late.

[weirderthanthou]

"That's the... portal company, right?" Jesse said slowly. "I've seen it mentioned in the files, but I thought it was some kind of... tourist thing."

"It is, but it's how people get portals out. I've known people who would at least check with them if it's possible to get a signal out," Rey said.

She hadn't tried it herself, since she hadn't had anyone to contact then.

"I might as well give that a try," Jesse said, after a moment. "Maybe they can at least help me figure out the time situation back home?"

"Possibly. The app is a good tool, too- if you can find your home on it, then you may be able to work out the difference based on the dates they give you between places."

Hey, at least people could give helpful tips!
