Rest assured, there was not a single can of meat seltzer or weird soda in sight at Caritas that evening.

Well, Tino seemed to have somehow gotten his hands on a bottle of pizza beer, but that just meant Summer felt particularly justified in just mostly ignoring him tonight, which was, generally, par for the course, anyway.

"Just don't let any of the customers see that," she informed him. "I think I might actually have to try and earn some trust back after last week."

Which, really, she still didn't think the meat seltzer was even half as bad as some of the other food crimes she'd committed in the past, but she did know how to read a bar.

"I couldn't tell you anything about 12th grade biology," Summer offered, "and I did graduate. Granted, my diploma is from this school, so take that for what it's worth. They let literally anyone teach at that place."

Case. In. Point.

"And I'm pretty sure one of my classes involved a striper pole."

One of her classes definitely involved a stripper pole.

"Was it a class on quick ways to make money?" Eddie asked.

The pole dancing for exercise was still a few decades away for him.

"No," Summer admitted, "although that's a really interesting idea for a class, actually. I'm pretty sure this one was one of those pole fitness aerobics things..." As soon as Summer said it, she remembered who she was talking to, "which, like, became a big trend several years back, and with good reason. Do you know how much of a workout you can get from one of those things?"

A beat.

"We got one in the back room if you don't believe me."

Because she had to add that, yes.

Eddie laughed. "I would probably pull a muscle or rip my pants or something else equally horrible."

Also the bat bites. Didn't want to reopen those.

"But now that I'm imagining it, I guess you would need really strong thighs."

On the bright side, the staff here at Caritas was also pretty used to having to patch up some gnarly bodily rips and tears. Granted, they could just use duct tape with the zombies, a method that would probably definitely not be clinic-approved, but...

"And arms," Summer noted, "and core, and....it's a whole full body thing, really. I definitely earned a bigger respect for strippers that semester, which is something that's definitely been a million times more useful than anything I'd have probably picked up about....cellular mitosis, or whatever."

"That's a good point. More schools should have practical courses," Eddie said. "I mean, Hawkins should have at least been way more strict about gym credits considering all the running away from horrors you end up doing."

"Maybe they just kind of figure," Summer reasoned, "you'll get that in regardless, no use wasting precious class time on it."

"I'm thinking more like big government conspiracy," Eddie said, because he lived for that shit. "Purposely make certain members of the town slower to appease the Upside Down monsters."

"You're making me feel very glad I did sports at my school before this one," said Summer, as if she'd ever in a million years had any issues escaping from horrible monsters. "But using a bullshit state institution like public school to cultivate potential bait for hungry secret monsters that no one knows about? Fuck, yeah, that tracks."

"Good news is the joke's on the government," Eddie said. "Turns out some of the biggest badasses in town are high school freshmen D&D players. Totally ready to kick some monster ass."

"I mean," Summer noted, "that kind of tracks, too. The government always screws things up and is generally filled with absolute morons, while some of the biggest nerds I know could probably take over the entire multiverse in a heartbeat if they wanted to."

"If anyone could take over the world it'd be a nerd I know--knew named Dustin Henderson," Eddie said fondly. "Most obnoxious kid on the planet, he was great."

A lot of things sucked about the whole time/universe travel thing, but not knowing what became of Dustin and the rest of those kids was the worst part.

"I don't know," Summer said. "Most obnoxious kid on the planet title, for me, goes to my brother, Morty."

Yes, Morty was actually 18 now (OH GOD), but he, unlike her, of course, seemed stuck in that perpetual state of being fourteen for life.

"But thankfully, for everyone, that guy isn't going to be taking over shit."

Not this version of him, anyway.

....although....

Doubt slowly started to creep over Summer's face.

"....probably."

"Could also be luring you into a false sense of security." If Eddie had actually met Morty he'd realize very quickly that was not the case. "I'm glad to be an only child, either way. Once a kid gets too obnoxious for me I can run off."
