Fandom High 20 Year Reunion Brunch, The Park, Sunday

Were you tired of socializing yet? Too bad, because the traditional Sunday brunch was happening in the park! And yes, with some of the... retro robot statues also in attendance.

The weather was good, the food and drink were plentiful, so come one and all for one last chance to meet up with people you hadn't seen for two decades.

(Or to just marvel at all the old people.)

And such crooked but soft smiles were doing absolutely nothing to dim the brightness of Shunsui's own wry smirks. "Oh, no," he assured her, not bothering to put much effort into tampering down the teasing lilt of it, "not you, of course not ♥."

He lifted his own cup in kind, closed his eyes a moment as he ducked his head in deference, and brought it in for a sip.

Octavia did the same, more or less. It was the ritual of the thing, because it was always the ritual of the thing.

And once she had, she looked at him again. Seemed to... really look, this time.

Though what she said was, "Mind if I sit down for a while, too?"

"I would be absolutely delighted if you would, Octavia-chan ♥," Shunsui assured her, beaming up at her for a moment before shifting a little, as if making room, although there was plenty, and giving the ground a soft, inviting pat. "The grass is every bit as lovely and comfortable as I remember it, and the company will be even better ♥."

And so Octavia sat down, carefully, into her newly assigned spot by his side. Not too far, either: her arm almost brushed against his sleeve.

"So, Shunsui," she murmured, softer and quieter and more private, somehow, now that she was more on his level. "What have you been doing?"

Shunsui would have to admit: the closeness did surprise him a little. Not that he minded in the slightest, of course, and not that he'd let it show, either, beyond a pleased and amused smile for it. Especially since it meant he didn't have to lean in too far as he tilted his head (and his grin) her way with his answer.

"Far too much ♥," he said, each word with a particular little emphasis that suggested, despite the playfulness in his tone, he was not actually being his usual hyperbolic self. "It's not easy, you know....being Captain Commander of the Gotei 13. I'm starting to suspect Yama-jii died just so he could finally be rid of the damn title. Ironic, considering he's the one who came up with it in the first place..."

His single eye implored her.

"Please tell me your answer to that question is much better than mine, Octavia-chan."

Octavia knew what a short moment in time this was. No use maintaining propriety about how far or close to someone she should sit.

Her lips were curving again, but even that seemed... quiet. "I teach kids about how to tend a garden," she said, "and how to defend themselves."

Not always in that order.

"Both valuable skills in their own regard," Shunsui noted with approval, "although I can't quite say I'm much good at either ♥."

There was a wink there, in spirit, at such a blatant half-truth, even if there couldn't exactly be one physically.

He settled into a sip of his sake, then, following it up with a thoughtful rumination of the cup itself as he said, "I'd like to get back to teaching again...."

Not just because it would mean less leading.

But mostly because of that, yes.

Octavia would have argued that there was still a lot of leading involved in teaching. But she would've known what he meant, too.

Far too well.

"Maybe you should," she said, gently. "Carve out a little time for it."

"See if Nanao-chan can perhaps shift a few things around in my..." The look Shunsui passed over to Octavia in that pause was one of disparaging esteem for the horrible word he was about to utter, "schedule..."

But he laughed, softly, before soothing that particular wound with another sip from his cup.
