Even when she wasn't working at the store on any particular day, Summer had gotten in the habit of at least checking what weird holidays were set for any given day, just because if it got really weird, and something went wrong, she was going to be the one having to deal with it. So when she walked into the bar and found Tino leaning against it over a book, reading glasses perched on his nose and everything, she just assumed it had something to do with D.E.A.R. and groaned.

"Not you, too," she said, coming around to behind the bar to drop off all her jello shots and get set up for the evening. "It's bad enough I have to deal with Apu doing this every week, and now I've got--"

It was then that Summer realized that the book Tino was ready was actually just a blank-paged journal, and she frowned as he flipped a page and seemed very invested in what he was 'reading', and she blinked, considered the glasses, realized he was wearing one of those cardigans with the patches on the elbows, and felt a flash of realization for what was going on here.

"Oh.My.God, Tino," she said, "are you trying to pretend to be an intellectual? Who are you trying to impress? Seriously, though, just a blank book? Couldn't even pull out ~~meta for~~ War and Peace or anything? Ohmygod, that's so sad."

Of course, he ignored her, continuing to 'read', nodding along thoughtfully to the excellent points this imaginary book was making, and she just shook her head and got back to prepping for work.

Although now it was going to bother her. Who was he trying to impress?

Were they better off just not knowing? Ever?

It felt a little weird for Goose coming into the bar that night, the first being that he was actually 21 and now old enough to drink at other bars and that there were very few Wednesdays between now and when he was leaving.

He took his usual seat at the bar, “so because I’m now 21 do you think I could have double shots?” he said hopefully.

"Goose," said Summer, already setting out the first row, "you almost always got double-shots before you were twenty-one. But," she paused, significantly, "you can if you promise me you take advantage of your new legal status by going out somewhere this weekend. Or at least hitting up the DN tomorrow, or something."

“True,” Goose grinned at that, as he went to get his first shot, “but I can definitely go someplace over the weekend, I’ve always been curious about the Devil’s Nest,” he admitted.

"Well," Summer pointed out, "now they've got no excuse to kick you out, so..."

Excuse her a moment while she wistfully looked back on how she never let that stop her, but anyway.

"Did you do anything special? For the actual day? Or just take it easy?"

Goose smiled, “I mostly took it easily,” he told her, “I talked to my dad, I don’t think he’s quite believed that I made it to 21,”

That was most people Goose.

"I kind of felt that way about myself, when I hit twenty-one," Summer admitted with a bit of a grin. "Every year since feels like kind of an accomplishment."

Even if she'd really actually mellowed out a lot in her adulthood.

"Shots are on me tonight, by the way," she added. "Happy birthday."

Goose smiled at that as he picked up his next shot, “thank you,” he told her, “it’s nice to be able to celebrate my birthday here with you,” he added as he threw back the shot.

"I mean," said Summer, "it's probably nice to get to celebrate your birthday at all. And just wait. I am taking bar-hopping on the mainland, too, before you leave, so we can really celebrate. It's just your timing sucks, since prom is this weekend, too, but maybe Saturday?"

Or maybe not, because, well....but she didn't know THAT.

“Saturday would work,” Goose nodded, also having no idea that would be a problem as well, “it’s been nice to be able to have a birthday these past couple of years but bar hopping sounds fun,” he paused, “I guess it is right in the middle of all the end of year school stuff, isn’t it?” he realised.

"Yeah, but we'll make it work," Summer assured him. "The end of the semester really kind of snuck up on me, not gonna lie. Are you set to head out right after, or do you have a little wiggle room?"

“Dad wants me to report back after graduation,”Goose told her, “I think I could probably stretch it a few days after so there’s a little bit of leeway but not much,” he admitted.

"...how much trouble would I get in if I just kidnapped you for a day or two after graduation?" Summer wondered. "Would it, like, cause a whole incident? Put me on some sort of wanted list?"

Goose blinked a bit at that, “I …don’t know,” he tilted his head, “I’m rather curious now to see what would happen,” he admitted, “I mean it didn’t take us much to get on the wanted lists when we started robbing banks to infiltrate MaCross’s gang,” he considered.

"I mean, you were also robbing banks, apparently," Summer pointed out. "But it's been a while since I got added to a new dimension's Most Wanted list. I definitely woildn't mind adding a new one if it meant giving you one last big Earth hurrah."

“That’s true, even though we were returning the Star stones we robbed, we just made sure that detail got left out of the press,” Goose grinned, “but I’m sure we could definitely do something where you would end up on our most wanted list,”

"Just a little nefarious kidnapping of a government supersoldier to show him the time of his newly legal drinking life, that's all!" said Summer. "NBD!"

Although, she had to admit, putting it that way did manage to spark a slightly different idea into her head....

Mainly one that had to do with how she hadn't seen Ignis in the bar for a while now...

...and how Goose was one way to go bigger than Gladio without having to just go full Sidon..

Goose grinned, unaware of any potential ideas this was causing, “I mean what’s the worst that could happen right?” he paused, “I mean aside from ending up with that court martial sooner rather than later, it will totally be worth it,”

It wasn’t a matter of if but when that court martial was happening really.

"If the court martial happens," Summer offered, "then maybe you'll get punished by being sent back here. And, really, if you're going down, might as well really go down in glory, am I right?"

Goose grinned at that as he picked up his next shot, “that would be one way to do it,” he said, “maybe I could crash a few ships as well, they might do anything to get rid of me then so I’m not around,”
