It was a crisp yet none-too-chilly September afternoon in the Park, the weather as always perfectly nice to fit the island's general ideas about what these events would be like.

The theme in the park seemed adorably retro, perhaps best seen in the massive banner that hung above:

There was a little huddle of Nephilim off to one side of the gathering, not being particularly inconspicuous considering three of them were well over six feet tall (and one of them was Raiden) and they didn't appear to be talking aloud. Also they kept shooting rather nervous looks over at that shirtless guy with the wings.

Why is he here? Gray moaned. Is he mad at us? Is he mad at me? Is it the high school thing? Is he mad about the high school thing? Was he trying to keep his brothers blocking Lazarus's view of him at all times? Yes. Yes he was. But they were all so much bigger than him that hopefully it just seemed coincidental.

If Laz was going to get mad about you deciding to go to high school, he's had a year plus to do it in, Bellamy pointed out quite reasonably. It would be dumb for him to get mad about that now, and whatever else he is, he's not that.

He had not been brought along to be the voice of reason, though. He had been brought along because, while they never talked about it because it pricked Alastair's Pride, Bellamy was the favorite child, and if Laz needed distracting they could always throw him on the bomb.

Also, there were so many excellent beings in Fandom that he hadn't fucked yet.

Something's changed, Alastair agreed. He didn't seem to care what you were up to until suddenly he did. You said there hadn't been any alterations in demonic activity on the mainland? he asked Raiden.

Raiden nodded as he chewed a bite of caramel apple. We've been keeping up our patrols, he confirmed. I haven't noticed anything that would worry me in Baltimore or anything. Maybe DC? I assume DC's full of demons anyway. It was a little far away to be reasonably his and Gray's problem, but since when had 'reasonable' stopped Laz from chewing them out for something?

Gray peeked around Bellamy at Lazarus across the way. You couldn't at least get him to put a shirt on?

We tried, Bellamy reported, so that Alastair would not have to admit to this failure. He says they're constricting.

I suggested he put the wings away, as they're rather conspicuous, but he said he didn't see the point when visiting an interdimensional nexus, Alastair said, and then his mouth pinched, the impression coming across from his mind that Lazarus's phrasing had been less...polite.

He took a deep breath and squared up his shoulders slightly more than they had already been. It's just one weekend. We'll get through it.
