"Look, Tino! Aren't they amazing?"

Summer was generally very proud of her jello shots overall, but tonight was a rare occasion indeed and she needed to really show off her brilliance at work here! After all, her 'gross' shot for the evening was usually something cribbed from some awful recipe she'd found on the internet, but this one was truly an inspired homebrew that, in a way, brought together various aspects of the community.

"I had someone," Ignis, much like Dean, had made it clear that he did not want his name attached to being involved in this project at all, despite the fact that radio had called them both out, but she was going to respect what she could and leave the rest to be blamed on the squirrels and the squirrels alone, "make me a frog gelatin base! And look, he made little crispy fried frog pieces to garnish it with! You should try one! It tastes like chicken! But boozy!"

Because that was exactly what you wanted in a jello shot, right?

Whatever. She was proud of herself, and was really looking forward to seeing what everyone else thought, too.

Where someone is way too proud of herself for what she's done to some poor innocent frogs, although, really, if you're going to blame anyone, blame Apu for bringing the frogs into the store in the first place....

Wednesdays were going to be weird for a while. Atton hadn't made his mind up yet if he wanted to even chance ever showing his face on Fandom again, but he had made his mind up about which friends he wanted to keep.

And so, with the clarity that came from a full week without a sense of dread weighing on his shoulders, he waited until it was about Summer's shift time in Fandom, and took out his new phone as he sagged on the sofa.

Summer had given Ignis the same deal she'd given Dean, that she wouldn't talk about his involvement in her inspired jello shot of the evening if he showed up at the bar that Wednesday. And while Ignis had no issue of being related to something made with frog--gigantoad, after all, had been one of his favorite meats to hunt for and cook with back home--he did have an issue with being related to something made by Summer. At least in any capacity where she was controlling the narrative.

And so it was him making a rare appearance at Caritas that evening, thinking he probably should get out more, anyway, and, besides, he actually was incredibly curious about how this jello shot managed to turn out.

"Awwww, Ignis!" Summer gushed when she saw that eternally sour-puss face sidled up to the bar. "You made it!"

Sure, sure, she'd sort of blackmailed him into it, but that was beside the point!

"What can I get you? Do you want me to find the fanciest sounding wine we have and then tell me how bad it actually is?"

She missed you in the bar, Ignis!!

Oh, please. Like there was going to be any other response she could possibly give to that.

But it was followed very shortly afterwards with a picture of a jello shot.

I made FROG JELLO TONIGHT!!! Just LOOK at what ur missing!! ❤️❤️❤️

"Well," said Ignis, whose expression suggested that he did not miss this at all, though there was a faint part of him that perhaps sort of did, shush, and that part of him was the part that managed to take that allegedly eternal sour-puss face into a faint grin, "you tell me. Is the fanciest sounding wine you have one that would go well with frog?"

please tell me that's a nickname and you didn't use actual frogs

Aw, Summer. He missed you too, he really did.

When Dean came into the bar he just sort of stood there and stared at the specials board.

Look, it was one thing to talk about an idea. It was another to actually go through with it.

Dean opened his mouth to say something but then realized that over the course of his life he had also made many many strange and bizarre choices that culminated into either a bad situation or an apocalypse. So instead of bringing up Summer's mindset and state of mind? He just said:

"Whiskey, please."

I used actual frogs 😇

Not the convincing argument for jello shots you thought it was, Summer, but okay.

plus we had a ton of them at the store on monday because apu is an idiot

She had made no deal about keeping him out of it with Apu.

Look, Dean, Summer was (usually) (sometimes) (more often than not) a woman of her word. When she said she would do something, she would (probably!) do it, okay?

And she was just smiling beatifically at Dean as he came in and she basked in that look on his face for a moment before sighing happily, and reaching for something not quite bottom shelf, but the next one up and pouring him one very heavily.

"Hi, Dean," she said. "How's it going? Just the whiskey tonight, huh?"

yeah i'm just going to say no to frog jello sorry summer but i have a limit. Atton eyed the remains of the stirfry they'd ordered in for dinner. You know what? He was suddenly glad he'd already eaten that. but please do document whoever actually tries it, i need to know

Hey, Dean has been on the island just a few weeks. How often has he hung out with Summer? A few times. He had no idea what lengths Summer would go through to produce a frog jello shot.

"I'm doing just fine. Whiskey only tonight," he said slowly followed by: "And how are you doing tonight?"

It wasn't a casual "How are you?" It was a "How is your mental state? Do we need to call the authorities? Perhaps a quiet room to sit in?" kind of "How are you?"

I had frog-based gelatin powder made for me special too!!

Summer was incredibly proud of herself tor that one, yes.

How's new York? Did you talk to your rooooooooomaaaaaateeeee?

And, yes, she did have to type it like that, thanks.

It had been well over a month, Dean, that was plenty of time to learn.

"I'm doing great!" Summer responded back cheerfully. "Did you see? You inspired a whole magic theme tonight!"

Because never forget where this started, Dean. Never. Forget.

Atton. You knew what she was asking.

But he was just buying some time, because he was trying to figure out how to whittle down the all-encompassing relief, lightness and bafflement of the past week, the feeling of having the sun on his face and nothing trying to drag him back into the shadows, the oddly lowkey way that conversation had wound up going, and just the utter wonder of what felt like the first real second chance he'd ever gotten...

new york's good, he texted. roommate's good. and i'm fine.

He stared at that message, having just sent it and then subsequently realized it didn't fully communicate the thing it was supposed to communicated, and added,

like. actually fine. i didn't know that was a real thing

Summer wondered if he could feel that eyeroll about thr tomatoes all the way in New York, and decided that, yeah, he probably could, because he'd just predicted that would be her response. She hoped he could also feel the smile that replaced it with the rest of his answer, though that seemed a little less likely.

She almost added 'so don't fuck it up' but figured that wouldn't really serve any real purpose behind snark, and, shockingly, sometimes snark was better left on the table after all.

Well. Maybe a little snark.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Dean said very loudly and looking around the room to see who might have heard Summer say that. "Apu is to blame for of this. Apu. It's all on him."

"Of course it is Summer allowed,no doubt helping that subtle glance around with the wink he gave him, but at least he was getting a mercy in the change of a topic. "So....you ready for your big first class tomorrow?"

Only one time before had Rey ever done a double take at a specials board.

"Summer."

"Rey," Summer said back, looking as sweet and as innocent as could be, which, you know, wasn't much. "Hiw's it going? Care to try some shots tonight?"

"Oh yeah. I've got a lesson plan. A syllabus. A... an attendance sheet. Homework. Term papers. Blue books. Apples."

Did someone forget he had a class tomorrow? Yep. He did.
