Summer had been sent something yesterday that made her absolutely squeal with delight once she realized what it was, and she was still riding that glee and anticipation by the time she came into the bar that evening. Which had the added bonus of having Tino being suspicious and skeptical about her good mood, for a change, which was really nice. It meant he was generally avoiding her, because he, like she so often did with him, figured if it was something making her so damn pleased, then it had to be something he was better off not even knowing about.

It didn't help that Summer noticed this behavior and started acting even more smug and mysteriously satisfied just to make him question and doubt and worry more. Because, really, at this point, he was just asking for it.

"Awww, Tino!" Summer said, beaming over at her fellow bartender with the same obnoxiously bright smugness she'd been tormenting him with ever since she waltzed through the door. "Did you hear that? You made second place! Congratulations!"

Her smile then shifted back to Jack. "So," she said, "what can your obviously favorite bartender get for you tonight, and will it help if I mention it's on the house tonight."

A paaaause.

"No reason."

Jack snorted. His eyes drifted to the menu. "You know what, I'm going to go for one of the real shots tonight," he said. "Because it's on the house. I'll have the Espresso one."

"No," Summer said, shaking her head, failing to not smirk. "You have to say it right."

"Ugh, space," Jack said, glaring at her. It looked very impressive, coming from a tired-looking guy in a Gojira t-shirt. "That's Me Espresso. There. Happy?"

"Yes," Summer said, with a face that was positively beaming to go along with it, and, as promised, she gladly presented him with his hard earned jello shot. "Very. Thank you. Sooooo~ooooo~ooooo...."

She dragged it out, and she dragged out the pause that followed, too, as she looked at him all bright eyed and eager.

"How's it going?"

Was she just trying to see how long she could dance around the whole new album thing? Um, have you met her?

"I know what you're doing," Jack groused, but he reached for the jello shot. "It's going fine, how's it going with you?"

Down the hatch with that shot.

"Also fine," Summer answered back, with a smug mock grousing of her own. "And what, pray tell, is it that you think I'm doing?"

"Withholding your opinion on my record to torture me," Jack said smoothly.

The smile on Summer's face was angelic, the flutter of her eyelashes beatific. And if she'd liked you even just a little less, Jack, she'd be innocently asking 'what record?'. But guess what? She did actually like you a lot, so, instead, what you got was, "Oh, you mean the one I listened to about four times, including once while high, just so that opinion could be well-informed and properly developed?"

"Yes, that one, and I'm going to need the cocktail if you keep stalling," Jack groused. "Come on, Smith, I'm sweating over here."

Beat.

"In a dignified, cool, manly way, obviously."

"Obviously," Summer agreed, and then she wiped most traces of messing around with him off her face as she looked at him seriously for a moment. And then her head tilted, almost curiously.

"Do you really think I'd give you this much shit if I thought it was bad?" she asked.

"... No," Jack allowed. "Unless you were trying to lull me into a false sense of security."

He squinted. "But I don't think you're doing that."

He was just naturally paranoid. And also still maybe a little tiny bit insecure about all of this.

Summer met that squint with a soft sort of smile. "I mean," she said, "you know it's not really my type of music, but..." Okay, so she was going to pause a little bit there for dramatic effect; she couldn't help it, okay?? It was, like, practically part of her speech pattern at this point. "I liked it. You guys did good work. It felt...like an actual album, like a lot of thought and care and passion, or whatever, went into it. Almost, like, I don't know, like you guys are actually not bad at this or something."

Jack blew out a loud breath.

"You know," he ventured slowly, "I think we can actually get some of the local alternate stations to play one or two of these this time...?"

"That's a good start," said Summer, nodding as her grin grew a little more. "Wpuld you guys want some of that? A little exposure? A little radio play? Kind of get out there a little more?"

If it sounded like Summer might be building up to an idea that she didn't want to just jump-scare Jack with, well....

And here was Jack, ready to subject-change this from something that made him increasingly twitchy-uncomfortable to, like, her life, instead being served this specific question. "... Yeah?"

Sound a little more sure of yourself, buddy.

"I'm just saying, if you needed some help with promotion or whatever," Summer offered, "I could help. I'm going yo have a lot more free time this summer. I've already got a groundwork, too, from all that social media I did for your last stuff. Could be pretty fuu~un, yeah? Screw just local. It's a global economy, baby."

"... I mean, yeah," Jack said. And then. Slowly. Recovered, as he spoke. "That'd be helpful, actually. Even just booking gigs is a ton of work that involves a lot of blanketing people with messages, which seems like a talent you have."

"I love bothering people to convince them to do something for me and/or my friends," Summer confirmed, with that delightful little excitement in her voice usually found in children about to get presents or when a real piece of shit gets ruthlessly doxxed on the internet. "I am so on it."

"Well. Good," Jack said, leaning back a touch. "I was going to ask you 'so hey, what have you been up to', but..."
