Fandom High Prom - Part I

City Hall is aglow with the light from the torches. Streamers in blue and yellow line the way for students towards the ballroom. Inside, hangings and other decorations represent the Lost Cities. A working volcano stands in Krakatoa's corner. Seven DVD players are projecting 3D images of the cities as well. And streamers, glitter, candles, balloons, and lights are everywhere.

Prom has begun.

Boone made a face. "I will never tempt that thing called fate. It'll jinx us all."

"Studio art sounds like fun. That was the class where they had the whole paint fight, right?"

"That's the one. It's been interesting," she laughed. "Paint fights, movies, action art. I've enjoyed it."

"I was planning on signing up for that class, but I thought it would be like art class at my old school - you know, the teacher puts a wooden guy in a pose and tells you draw it or paint a bowl of fruit in watercolors or something."

"No, it's been nothing like that," she grinned. "You should take it next semester if they offer it. Of course I have to admit the people in my class make it fun. Barbossa is a hoot."

"You know," Boone paused. "I never thought I wouldn't be surprised to hear that a pirate's taking an art class." He grinned, "I guess this place does that."

"He's in my speech class as well. I've spent my semester trying not to fall out of my chair laughing."

"Oh, I've got the class right after yours." He grinned, "I think I got Professor Cregg not to give us a final."

"You're lucky, we need to give a ten to fifteen minute speech on what we've learned since we've come to Fandom," Isabel said. "It's harder then you'd think."

His brows drew together. "That's rough," he commented, "I can imagine how hard it'll be. Especially because she'll probably be asking questions after you're done."

"I don't mind the questions, it's the trying to fill the time that's killing me. I either don't have enough, or I wind up going over. It's hard to find that happy medium."

"You should, um, try quoting a lot of dead, smart people." Boone suggested, "If that doesn't work, just talk really fast or really slow."

"She's already called me on speaking too quickly," Isabel laughed. "Since the speech is about what we've learned in Fandom, I'm thinking a speech about how muppets are actually animate might be a good place to start."
