Fandom High Prom - Part I

City Hall is aglow with the light from the torches. Streamers in blue and yellow line the way for students towards the ballroom. Inside, hangings and other decorations represent the Lost Cities. A working volcano stands in Krakatoa's corner. Seven DVD players are projecting 3D images of the cities as well. And streamers, glitter, candles, balloons, and lights are everywhere.

Prom has begun.

"Constable Fra-ser." Parker pauses. "Benton?" Then she smiles brightly. "I swear, you can look up. I trust you."

"I don't know if that's so wise," Fraser replies, still keeping one eye on their feet. "I don't want to injure you."

Parker squeezed his hand, and said, "You're not wearing steel-toed boots. I'll risk it?" She's fighting the impulse to laugh. Dork. Dork. Cute, cute dork.

"I don't believe so," Fraser says. "Did you not bring a date, Miss Parker?"

And now, Parker's wondering if it's her. Or the dress. Or both. Good, bad, good-bad, good...? "Yes, but he's dancing with a friend of mine who didn't have a date right now. There's a guy shortage at Fandom. Maybe you noticed?"

"Um." Fraser can only manage to shake his head. "A shortage of males is a bad thing?"

"It is for dancing." Okay, enough's enough. She finally reaches up and yanks his chin down so he'd at least have to look at her face. "Which is why I asked you. Plus? You've been really nice this year. I wanted to thank you for that."

Fraser smiles. "You're very welcome. I'm glad you feel that way. I was hoping I didn't come across as too distant. Thank you for not causing trouble."

"You really didn't come across as distant," Parker reassured him. "Or detached. Just reserved. I hope you'll be around next semester, and this summer?" She might have pouted. "We'd miss you if you left."

"I have no plans to leave," Fraser tells her. "Unless I am, for some reason, dismissed, I should be around next semester."

"Yay!" Parker resisted the urge to hug Fraser, and just grinned up at him. "Thank you for the dance, Constable. Benton."

"You're quite welcome, Miss Parker." Fraser grins back. "I'm glad to have not stepped on your feet."

Parker grinned back up at him, and twirled away and back.
