Fandom High Prom - Part I

City Hall is aglow with the light from the torches. Streamers in blue and yellow line the way for students towards the ballroom. Inside, hangings and other decorations represent the Lost Cities. A working volcano stands in Krakatoa's corner. Seven DVD players are projecting 3D images of the cities as well. And streamers, glitter, candles, balloons, and lights are everywhere.

Prom has begun.

"Some fun?" She raised her eyebrows at him, then spun out and back. "I can let you have some fun. Just don't make me bail you out of the pokey."

"Out of the pokey? What have you been watching recently?" Daniel grinned, twirling her mostly successfully.

Sam bumped her nose into his shoulder and started giggling. "Nothing in particular. But doesn't it sound interesting and colorful?"

"It does," Daniel grinned. "But very unlike what I expect to hear you say, I will admit."

"Doing the expected gets boring, and doesn't seem to get me anywhere. Have you noticed?"

"I'm sure that even doing the expected, you can get anywhere you want to."

Sam made a face at him. "There are times, Daniel, when I don't think you're watching the same life I'm living."

Daniel grinned, and spun her again. "I see an incredibly talented young girl with oceans of potential and the whole universe in front of her," he said.

Sam's head spun a little and she grinned back. "Between you and Cam tonight, my head won't fit through the door."

"I'm glad to hear that he's giving you the compliments you deserve," Daniel grinned. "Is he treating you as he should?"

"Better than I have been in a while," Sam said, quietly, "and he didn't even make fun of me when I had a craving for a cheeseburger instead of a fancy dinner."

Daniel would have hugged her, but he wasn't sure how he could do that in the middle of a dance. "That's very good," he said. "It means that I won't have to call him into my office first thing on Monday and lecture him."

"Oh, my god, Daniel! No lectures! Promise me, right now!"

Daniel sighed. "Fine, no lectures," he promised. "Although as he's treating you well, I wouldn't be lecturing anyway."

Sam wasn't convinced, especially when another thought occurred to her. "And no ganging up on him with Kawalsky, either. He's only seventeen and doesn't deserve that."

Daniel's look was hurt and innocent. "That thought never even crossed my mind," he assured her.

"Uh huh." Sam's look was decidedly skeptical. "So, are you glad you came?"

"Ask me at the end of the evening," Daniel said, after thinking for a moment.

"Oh?"

"So far, you are my first dance of the evening," Daniel said. "And I'm hoping, not the last."

"You'll be fine," Sam said, "but we needed to set up some context so it wouldn't look strange when your real dance partner came over."

"Patience, Daniel."

"I know, I know," Daniel nodded. "And I'm glad I get to spend this time with you as well."

"Me too." Sam almost laid her head on his shoulder, but then remembered where they were. "We never made enough time for this, did we?"

Daniel sighed, and squeezed her hand slightly. "We didn't, no," he agreed. "Let's try not to make that same mistake again."

She squeezed his hand back. "No, let's not."
