Fandom High Prom - Part I

City Hall is aglow with the light from the torches. Streamers in blue and yellow line the way for students towards the ballroom. Inside, hangings and other decorations represent the Lost Cities. A working volcano stands in Krakatoa's corner. Seven DVD players are projecting 3D images of the cities as well. And streamers, glitter, candles, balloons, and lights are everywhere.

Prom has begun.

[ooc: Wait for the OCD threads or suffer my wrath. Done! But please wait for the music threads to go up before dancing. Prom II will be going up in about two hours. Later.]

"Blaming it on the common room? I hope you didn't let him get away with that," Elizabeth laughed. She grinned. "Your mom sounds like she'd get on well with Dr. Jackson. And I will... but not in the middle of the dance floor. And the hiking up of the dress at sporadic intervals isn't part of the dance!"

"And have my reputation as annoying impossible best friend besmirched? Never!" D'anna giggled. "I don't know him, but if he's the sort that tries convince people that large jungle bugs are legitimate dinning delicacies? Mom would love him." She rolled her eyes and grinned.

"No random dress hiking, got it!"

"Good, good," Elizabeth grinned. "He's an anthropologist, so I'm sure he'll have suggested something similiar at some point."

"Okay then." Elizabeth listened for the beat, and watched as the lot in the middle jumped. "Right hand, palm down. Left hand, palm down. Right palm up. Left palm up." She demonstrated as she said.

"Ah! Mom would love him then. She's a documentary film maker." D'anna set down her punch and followed Elizabeth's instructions. She didn't think about it but she counted along to the rhythm, "one, two, three, four..."

"That sounds like an interesting job," Elizabeth said.

She smiled. "That's good. Keeping the beat is pretty important in dance," she said, going through the next few motions,

"It is but it's a lot more work than most people think. What do your parents do?" D'anna asked.

"Thanks." It was D's turn to turn slightly pink. "I'm not that great a dancer so knowing what happens when really helps."

"My mom's an English professor, and my dad's a lawyer now," Elizabeth replied.

Elizabeth laughed slightly as the hands moved down to the hips. "I did ballet for a good few years when I was younger, and then moved on to ballroom and a bit of Latin, which is definitely more usful. Pretty much the first thing I learnt was to listen out for the beat."

"Now? Was he something else before?" D'anna wondered out loud.

Having no idea what those were, she smiled. "You know, I think I could live here till the day I die and still never figure out everything. I assume those are types of dances?"

Elizabeth grinned. "Couple of things actually. He was a Navy pilot before I was born, and he was also a politican more recently."

"Sorry, yes, they are. Ballet is more a performace dance, and you'd go and see it on stage somewhere. Ballroom and Latin are done with partners and while they can be performance, you'll do them at events such as this, depending on the type of music. Ballroom includes formal dancing, like you do at weddings and such."

"Sounds like an interesting life. My dad was interested in politics but wound up a filmmaker like mom." D'anna smiled. "No worries. It's mostly a case of learning new words for concepts I already know. And this is the dancing that one engages in when hopefully there's no audience?" She grinned.

"Yeah, he's got a good few tales," Elizabeth grinned. She nodded. "I've had the same thing with Aeryn as well. I'll tell you what I've told her; if I say anything you don't understand, just stop me and I'll explain, best I can." Elizabeth laughed. "Oh yes! It's also best done in a group, and with some form of alcohol around so you can blame that, even if you haven't been drinking!"
