Fandom High Welcome Picnic, The Park, All Day: Part II

School in ruins = picnic in the park.

[~~WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE.~~ Mini-OCD is done, woo! This is part two of the picnic, for general mingling. Part one is happening simultaneously here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. *g* Both posts are open to everyone.]

"That they happen with relative frequency, and that the students are responsible for fighting them off. That the school was destroyed by one of those invasions," he said. "Is that similar to what you were told?"

"I didn't hear about them being frequent." This place was sounds remarkably similar to where he'd just come from. "These are just random invasions?"

"That's the impression I received." He shrugged a bit helplessly. "But I don't know any more than that, at least not yet."

"I wonder if there's a reason for the invasions," Gavin said more to himself but loud enough for Karal to hear. "Something underlying."

"Something about this place that makes it valuable," he added. "If you're here, and I'm here, and all these people are here, all from different worlds, or planets, then you must be able to get from one to the other through here. There's people in my world, if they could acquire such a place." He shivered. "It would be very bad, for everywhere."

"Mine too," he said. "And..." He stopped, not sure how to approach the topic with Karal. "Have you heard anything about time differences?"

"I think so. I, my world, time runs differently there. It passes much slower, a month here to days there." Not that he understood how, but he could accept it nonetheless. "Is that what you mean?"

"Sort of," Gavin said, pausing and trying to think of how to say something like this. "I've met someone from my future."

"But how-- " Karal rubbed his forehead, mind spinning with the implications of such a possibility. "No. I don't believe it's possible for me to understand how that could work, at least not before both us are very old, but I can accept that it's true. All right. You have met someone from your future."

"I don't even know how it works," Gavin admitted. "Sorry to give you a headache. It's just...this place seems like it's more than just a school."

"No, I'd rather know than not. A headache is a small cost. And I think you're right." He pressed his fingers together, thinking hard. "If it leads from one world to another, from one time to another, that may be the reason it has no standing army, no military force. Maybe it's too important to risk letting them in, and that's why it's left to the students." He took a deep breath. "To us to defend."

"This place is a lightning rod?" Gavin asked, frowning in thought. "Things are drawn here?"

"It would explain much of the strangeness." Karal made a deliberate effort and smile. "Hopefully it will never be an issue, but it's good to be aware of potential dangers."

"Despite the school being in pieces," Gavin said, "it seems like they know what they're doing here in terms of defense."

"If there has been as many invasions as they say, then they must," he said, brightening slightly. "Because here the island remains uninvaded despite, as you say, the destruction of the school."

"Which sounds like it happened due to th element of surprise," Gavin said. "Still...it's weird to have one place so heavily invaded."

Karal nodded in definite agreement. "There's a library, it's supposed to be open over summer. I'm intending to find out a much as I can about the history of the island and the school," he said. "I can share what I find with you, if you'd like."

Nodding, Gavin said, "Okay. I'm not much for libraries myself. I don't know if I'd know what to do in one."

"I'm not a fighter. If the island is invaded I may be in serious trouble, but I am a skilled researcher," he said simply. "There's no reason for us both not to benefit from it. And often many can find an answer where one cannot."

"I know how to fight," Gavin said, stupid stomach scar notwithstanding. "You do the books and I'll do the...other stuff."

Startled, Karal glanced at him, searching his face. "Thank you," he said after a moment or two, and smiled. It was an amazingly kind and generous thing to offer, and wholly unexpected. "We can help each other."

Gavin smiled back. It was like having a wingman now. "We can."
