Fandom High Welcome Picnic, The Park, All Day: Part II

School in ruins = picnic in the park.

[~~WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE.~~ Mini-OCD is done, woo! This is part two of the picnic, for general mingling. Part one is happening simultaneously here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. *g* Both posts are open to everyone.]

"Sit," she ordered, "Because there's at least," she counted on her fingers, "me, Will, Xander, Buffy, and Giles, and we're all from different points in the timeline. Buffy? Still a cheerleader. Hasn't moved to Sunnydale yet."

Vi sat. Actually it was more of a controlled collapse. "General Buffy was a cheerleader?" she asked. Then, "Okay, not the point. So ... we all kind of know each other, but kind of don't? And when is it for you?"

"General?" Oh, she'd just love that. Actually, both versions she knew would. Or not. "Xander will probably know a version of you, I think, but Buffy, Giles, and Willow won't. And I'm from about a year after Sunnydale, now, but I got here about a month afterwards. I got sent here to be out of the way."

And if there was still a little bitterness about that, well, at least it had lessened.

"General in a good way!" Vi said quickly, blushing. "Like, a leader. It kind of started as a joke with Rona and Molly, just to blow off steam, and ... um." She wasn't making things better. "Now I feel really bad, but no offense to your sister."

She frowned, thinking about the rest of what Dawn had said. "Okay, and Sunnydale was about three weeks ago for me. So you're a year older than the Dawn in my world. Anyhow, for me? My parents found me and shipped me here as some kind of re-education in normalcy." She snorted. "I'm not sure it worked out."

Dawn waved her hands, "No biggie, but wow, I'm not using that on Buffy. Might give her ideas, and god, I hate army green."

"Just three weeks ago?" She asked, sympathetically, "How are you dealing? And wow, this is not the place for normal. Did people tell you about the martians? And the pudding rain?"

"The whole thing since I got my first watcher is like this really long, really strange acid trip," Vi confessed. "I'm not even sure I'm processing it. So Martians and pudding rain sound about right. Why not?"

[OOC: Storm last night fried my connection. Grrr.]

"You'll be happy to know--or maybe not--that you're the third vampire slayer on the island," Dawn continued, trying to give Vi something kind of familiar, "which of course means that we've got no vamps for you to slay. On the bright side, there is more than one bathroom for every twenty people, and there's co-ed housing, and lots of the boys like to run around with no shirts on. Plus we get invaded occasionally, so you can beat up on that stuff."

"Me, Buffy, and who's the third?" Vi asked, perking up. "And there's only one other girl in my cabin. The amount of testosterone in there is kind of overpowering, but it was a lot easier to take a shower."

She pouted slightly. "Is it weird that I'll kind of miss the slaying part?"

"A girl named Mel," Dawn explained, "and she's kinda punk. Kinda like if Faith and Spike had a kid and whoa forget I said that, because hi with the brain-hurting. What cabin are you in? Are the boys pretty? And yeah, I can imagine."

"No, I think that's a slayer thing. But Xander's trying to work something out for practice, if you want. Or I bet one of the other slayers would work out with you, too."

It was brainhurty, but Vi thought a Faith/Spike kid would actually be kind of cool, even if she was kind of sure Buffy would kill both of them if Spike wasn't already dead. Twice. She made a mental note to track down this Mel.

She answered Dawn's other question instead of saying that. "Chupacabra," she supplied. "They're all kind of pretty. Except maybe the big turtle guy, who I guess is cute for a turtle?"

"And I'll ask Xander about practicing. Is he a teacher, or what?"

Dawn stared. "A turtle?"

"And, um, no, he owns or runs an apartment building in town. Mauvise Chance, I think it's called."

"A six-foot-tall turtle," Vi said, eyes wide. "Named Donatello. And he says his brothers are here, too."

She smiled sheepishly. "I thought he was some weird demon."

"There's more than one six foot tall turtle here?" Dawn glanced around, but didn't see any, not that it sounded like they'd be easy to miss, "And, um, I guess it's good that he got to come here with family? I can totally see how you'd make that mistake, and thank you for telling me so I didn't do the same thing."

"That's what he said," Vi nodded. "I haven't met the others yet." She glanced around. "So most of the students at least look human? That should keep me from any bad stakings. Well, that and that they took away my stakes."

"Look, yes," Dawn nodded, "but every so often there's a demon who's very human looking--one just graduated, in fact. It's better to check, if he or she is our age, just in case. They took mine, too, but it's not like you can't find something in a crunch, right?" She wasn't sure whether to mention the scythe, and decided to leave that up to Mel.

"I can use a branch or a pencil or something," Vi agreed. "They told me there were no vampire students. What kind of demon graduated?"

"I'm not really sure what kind," Dawn admitted, "but he could teleport and throw fireballs. Name is Belthazor. Not one of ours, I don't think."

"Sounds nasty," Vi said. She'd stay away from this Belthazor. "I don't recognize the name, but it's not like I know that much about anything except vampires and whatever Clem was."

"Depended on the day, actually. Anyway, has anyone heard from...oh, never mind. You wouldn't know my Clem. How are you dealing with being a slayer and your first almost apocalypse?"

"No one had heard from my Clem that I know of. I hope he got out somehow," Vi said. "This might be a Slayer thing? But the actual slaying and apocalypse part was the best thing in Sunnydale for me, kind of. It's like, I was so afraid of everything and I practically thought Spike was going to eat me when we started training and I just wanted to go home except that would be even scarier ... and then Willow did the spell and the Turok-Hans were there and it was like, I knew who I was and what to do, you know?" She paused for breath. "I miss Amanda, though. And I hate that so many people got hurt or worse."

Dawn nodded, "I know. And I miss her too. But I don't think you're the only one who felt that way, either."

"It makes me feel sort of crazy, but I think you're right," Vi said. "Willow's spell was good mojo. What about you? How did you get used to this place?"

"I started dating a guy who hunts demons with his dad and brother," Dawn grinned. "You be amazed how much that helps."

"Ooooh," Vi said. "There are guys here who hunt demons? That's awesome. And you look so, so happy."

"I am," Dawn realized how true it was, and finally had to admit, a little bit, just to herself, that not all of Buffy's ideas sucked. This was progress. "And yeah--the Winchesters? Sam, and Dean, and their dad's a professor. They don't do it the same way we do it--or that I assume you do it, since that's the way I do it--since they use guns and salt most of the time, but they're still really good. Plus, it was cool not having to hide stuff, you know?"
