Caritas, Thursday [7/12]

Phoebe had been trying to hide from the random soundtracks popping up all day. It wasn't going so well.

So taunt me and hurt me,
Deceive me, desert me,
I'm yours 'til I die,
So in love,
So in love,
So in love with you, my love, am I.

"Couldn't you have followed me around with a better damn song?" she demanded angrily.

So taunt me and hurt me,
Deceive me, desert me,
I'm yours 'til I die,
So in love,
So in love,
So in love with you, my love, am I.

She got the zombies put together and unlocked the doors. Once behind the the bar she looked at Tino.

"Quarters?"
"Can we pretend we're using quarters and just drink?"
"Good plan."

It was going to be an interesting night for the patrons of Caritas if this was how the two of them were starting out the shift.

She shivered deliciously and leaned in to him, wanting the closeness, wanting his touch, wanting...

I hunger for you like a sheet
for the scent of your lips
and in the heat that rakes across your fingertips...

"I... shouldn't...?" Her head was spinning from his proximity and all the alcohol she'd had to drink.

"And maybe if I'm really lucky..." Jack's smile wasn't even close to nice as he let his lips almost brush her skin, her willingness to screw over someone she claimed to be in love with spurring him on. "Jim will want to join us when he's back."

I didn't want to hurt you baby
I didn't want to hurt you
I didn't want to hurt you
But you're pretty when you cry

Jack had not had a good day, and he didn't even blink at the music.

Oh jealousy where is thy sting
who knows the poison fruit you bring
But fools rush in where angels fear
and lose the love they hold most dear

Jim.

God, what the hell was she doing? She pulled away, almost overbalancing. "I'm sorry, I, no, no... God." She ran her hands over her face and pushed her hair back. "I'm drunk and not thinking. But this, no... Paperwork, too much trouble, not what you want, remember? In love with Jim and drunk. Really really drunk. Sorry... didn't mean to lead you on."

She put her head down on the counter. "I want Jim back."

"You didn't," he told her, rolling his eyes at the music. "I don't do leading on."

No, not in a plane, not in the dark, not on a train, not in a car, not up a tree
'Cause I don't like 'em, Sam, see,
Not in a schoolhouse or a shoebox with a house-mouse or a red fox
Not here, there, and everywhere
Didn't even like the Beatles with their long, long hair.

"You're repeating songs now." He drained his glass and ordered another. "And it still doesn't make any sense."

Come good people and gather round
step out of the water before you drown
tide is coming swift and deep
gonna knock you off your feet

"Song's right," Lana said a little blearily, head still done. "I'm in way over my head with you."

"Hate to break it to you, Lana, but you're not with me, in over your head or not," Jack replied, sounding mildly amused. "And don't even bother," he added to the air.

"Which is a good thing," Lana said as firmly as she could manage. "You're my friend and we're allowed to flirt, but that's it. Anything else and you'd chew me up and spit me out."

She wasn't censoring anymore, the drink had removed her ability to do that. "Might feel good. Really good. But it's not worth hurting Jim. Or me. And I wouldn't matter to you and I need to matter."

She sighed. "Sorry."

"Don't worry about it," he said dismissivley. "You said it yourself. Drinking, not thinking."

"You're a good friend, Jack," she said a more than a little tipsily. "You really could have taken advantage of the situation, but you didn't."

She sighed heavily. "I think I should head home now."

I'm tired and I want to go home.
I'm tired and I want to go to bed.
I had a little drink about an hour ago
and it went right to my head...

Tino set a new drink in front of him, and Jack gave him a small smile before picking up the glass. "Good idea."

Call me morbid or absurd.
But to me, coming from you,
friend is a four letter word.

"That's a bit harsh," he said after a minute.

"It's mean," she said. "Your music is mean. I don't like the way it talks about you." She finished up the last of her drink and stood up. "Good night, Jack. I'll see you later."

So long, farewell, auf weidersehen, adieu...
