Caritas, Wednesday Night

Faith made sure to show up bright and early for her shift, since she'd been late last week. Freaking New Year's.

So the school had new kids. Should be interesting. Good thing they didn't card. She'd never been one to deny teenagers their booze.

Caritas. Open. And all that jazz.

(OOC: I'm here, but I might be hit-and-miss, so if speed's your thing, mod Tino.)

"Seriously?" asked Mike. "Dude, this place is amazing."

"You think?" Melody asked, interested. "I wish the band didn't play so many covers. Covers are kind of dull. But it's awesome that they're staying employed when they;re all gross like that."

She held out her hand. "My name's Melody."

"Mike," he said, returning the handshake. "I guess they have trouble coming up with original stuff if they're dead. You think they know any Gladys Knight songs?"

"They should," Melody declared. "Every decent band knows 'Midnight Train to Georgia.'"

"That's what I'm talking about," said Mike with a grin. "You know, I went on tour with Gladys as one of her back-up singers. She's my auntie."

"Ohmigod, really?" Mel gasped. "I'm a drummer and I'm in a band called Josie & the Pussycats and I would die to play with somebody like that."

"No kidding?" asked Mike. "Yeah, Auntie Gladys was great to work with. Problem was that her other back-up singers didn't like that I got to skip the whole audition practice. We got into a few times, then it was back Vegas and parking cars. I actually made more money as a valet anyway."

"Music so does not pay," Melody sympathized. "Unless a record company decides you look like a star, but that only happens in movies and maybe once or twice in real life. I always had to groom pets for a living."

"Yeah, I dig it. I made more money parking cars at the casinos. Doesn't sound as glamorous as touring with Auntie Gladys until someone pulls up in a Ferrari," said Mike.

"I bet that makes you bank," Melody said, impressed. "Didja ever borrow a car for a little vroom-vroom?"

Mike chuckled. "Sort of. My boss had this sweet Aston Martin, and there was this hot woman who told me she'd love to go out with me if I picked her up in a cool ride. So I borrowed the Aston Martin from my boss, took her out to a club, and she left the car keys from my pocket and took off with the car."

"Duuuuuude," Melody said sympathetically. "I hope somebody caught her. Did you have to walk home?"

[identity profile] mike-cannon.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
"I was more concerned with getting the car back. My boss was ex-CIA. I was worried what he'd do to me if something happened to the car," said Mike. "My buddy and I caught her. Turns out she was working for some chop shop. They had already started taking the car apart, but when they realized who my boss was, they put it back together and gave it back."

"You must have had some boss," Melody said lightly. "I love stories with happy endings."

Re: The Bar

[identity profile] mike-cannon.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
"He was this really tough, scary guy. You really had to watch out if you crossed him," said Mike. "But he was great to work with. He got me out of working valet and into working in the casino's surveillance department. If he was still around, I'd probably still have a job there."

Re: The Bar

[identity profile] meetingsnoopy.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
"But if you were still there, you couldn't be here," Melody pronounced. "Unless you can be in two places at the same time, and I can't, can you?"

Re: The Bar

[identity profile] mike-cannon.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Nope," said Mike, smiling again. "Besides, I had other reasons for leaving. If you stay in Las Vegas for too long, you get burned out. Teaching computers to high school kids is a whole new challenge for me."

He sipped his beer before continuing. "So, Melody, what are you doing in a town like this. You said you were a drummer?"

Re: The Bar

[identity profile] meetingsnoopy.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Uh-huh," Melody nodded. "The singer in my band decided to make a solo record and she is spending about 500 years on it, plus I needed a break, and our manager knew a manager in New York who had a client who was trying to unload a record store. I figured it would be an investment." The last sentence fit a little awkwardly in her mouth. "So I've been here since May."

Re: The Bar

[identity profile] mike-cannon.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Aw, man, it's always tough when you have a singer who decides to go solo for a while," said Mike. "But on the plus side, now you're bringing some sweet tunes to the people of Fandom."

"Yeah, that rocks," Mel said. "The shop's redecorated and most cool. You should stop in sometime."

"I will make sure I do that," promised Mike.
