The York Gallery; Wednesday [ 09/17 ] -- Exhibit Opening! 8pm onward.

The past few weeks of work were finally coming to a head, and Charlotte was both nervous and excited and getting herself worked up into a frenzy with making sure everything was perfect. She couldn't help feeling an overwhelming sense of satisfaction with the exhibit, though. The turnout wasn't huge, but nicely manageable and thankfully not small by any measure. Some of the work was a bit amateurish, but she had to admit to being pretty blown away by a few of the others.

By the time eight o'clock rolled around and the doors were open, the gallery was set up in a display of the pieces by artist, and the usual spread of treats and drinks were available in another area of the room. Charlotte, dressed in a vibrant red, milled around the gallery to make sure everything was in order and all the guests were enjoying the exhibit. She was also keeping an eye out for the artists of certain pieces, since she was very eager to potentially meet them.

The Community Showcase Exhibit was open!

[[ or will be, once I get the very extensive OCD up! It's up! Enjoy! ]]

Claire wasn't hovering near her pieces. Really. She was ... giving them a final critical inspection.

Which looked a lot like hovering.

Cal remember Claire's red hair more than he, admittedly, remembered Claire herself, but he did know that they spoke once or maybe twice and the...well, the what looked like hovering by the piece with her name on it confirmed the name-and-face connection enough that he gave her a small smile and said, "Not bad stuff you got there."

Claire looked at the art as if seeing it for the first time, and brushed her bangs to the side before speaking. "Thanks," she said. "I mean, it's nothing big, we had to do the self-portraits in 10th grade and I just thought it was cool I got to photograph a unicorn, but ..." she shrugged. "It's fun."

"You know," he said, a little amused by how bashful she seemed talking about her own art, "I can't really help notice the whole Medusa sort of thing going on with that self-portrait. I like it; very cool. But I'm biased. Greek."

"Like nobody in my class got that," Claire said, defenses dropping slightly. "So, you aren't worried about hanging around me?" She arranged her face to look solemn. "I might turn Greek boys to stone with my gaze."

It occurred to her that Gabe had been Greek. She thought. They hadn't really talked about that stuff much.

"No one got that?" Cal seemed a little shocked. And scandalized. "Seriously? That's, like..." He blinked, shaking his head, and then shoved it aside. "And I haven't turned to stone quite yet, so I think I'm safe. Maybe the third generation bit decreases my susceptibility."

"I grew up in L.A.," Claire explained, rolling her eyes. "Nobody read anything unless their parents owned the movie rights. Totally depressing."

She smiled a little. "So do you speak Greek?"

Cal shook his head a little. "Only a few choice phrases and swears that we weren't supposed to pick up from my yia yia. I know Latin, though, ironically."

"I know ... nothing," Claire said. "I wish I could have cussed Mr. Cullen out in another language in sex ed today, though. That would have been cool."

She was still a little pissed off about that whole thing.

Cal gave a miserable little groan at the mention of that class, only then realizing that he remembered Claire was in his group, but he hadn't paid much attention to her issues with it, dealing with several of his own himself.

"I'd rather just ignore the fact that that class even exists at all," he muttered.

The groan was the only appropriate reaction, really, and Claire nodded in agreement.

"He gave me detention," she volunteered, sounding almost pleased with herself. "But I got to call him a throwback freak first, so whatever."

"A throwback freak?" Cal repeated, as if testing out the taste of the phrase. "Nice," he decided, although something about it, about today, made his brow crease in worry at the f-word.

Amber took her time in studying the self-portrait. It was way too intriguing not to dedicate a certain amount of time to. The unicorn was beautiful, but the other one, it just seemed to captivate her.

Claire gave Amber a wary glance. She was certainly lingering; that was good. "What do you think?"

Re: Claire Fisher.

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think it's amazing," she replied quietly, eyes still on the portrait. "Your talent... it's astounding."

Re: Claire Fisher.

[identity profile] swipedthatfoot.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Claire's first instinct was to think Amber was pulling her leg, but there was none of that in the girl's voice.

"It was my final project for 10th-grade art," she explained, tilting her head to try to get a fresh view. "You really like it that much? All I see is the stuff I could change."

Re: Claire Fisher.

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's because it's yours," she said with a little smile directed at the other girl. "And yah, I do. I think it's very nice." She imagined Cal really liking it, given the red hair and all.

"Then thank you!" Claire almost chirped. "Did you put in anything?"

"You're very welcome," she grinned. Then she cringed a little. "Yah, I did, but it's just nowhere close to being as good as what you've done. I feel silly for even submitting."
