The York Gallery; Wednesday [ 09/17 ] -- Exhibit Opening! 8pm onward.

The past few weeks of work were finally coming to a head, and Charlotte was both nervous and excited and getting herself worked up into a frenzy with making sure everything was perfect. She couldn't help feeling an overwhelming sense of satisfaction with the exhibit, though. The turnout wasn't huge, but nicely manageable and thankfully not small by any measure. Some of the work was a bit amateurish, but she had to admit to being pretty blown away by a few of the others.

By the time eight o'clock rolled around and the doors were open, the gallery was set up in a display of the pieces by artist, and the usual spread of treats and drinks were available in another area of the room. Charlotte, dressed in a vibrant red, milled around the gallery to make sure everything was in order and all the guests were enjoying the exhibit. She was also keeping an eye out for the artists of certain pieces, since she was very eager to potentially meet them.

The Community Showcase Exhibit was open!

"Yes it did," Dale beamed back. "Your hard work paid off and I'm exceptionally glad I didn't have to submit my stick figure artwork."

"And I'm only left to be disappointed about that one," Charlotte said, feigning a small pout. "We still did get some stick figures, though," she added, pointing toward Murdock's pieces. "Yours would have fit right in. A little stick figure J. Edgar Hoover, perhaps."

"Well then my art work would have been mocked by art critics everywhere," Dale snickered. "I would have been considered derivative and a hack."

"Or absolutely brilliant," Charlotte pointed out, with a short, amused laugh of her own. "You can never tell with those art critics."

"I only care about one person's artistic opinion," Dale replied. "Though I have a feeling she might be biased."

"Very," Charlotte, going ahead and assuming that Dale meant her, laughed a little. "I'll admit, I don't think she's likely to think they're brilliant, but I'm sure she'd find them very charming and adorable, and more than just as a reflection of the artist."

"Like I said," Dale smirked. "Biased."

He looked around at everyone admiring each others artwork and grinned.

"Charlotte? You never fail to amaze me how you cannot only recruit great artistic talent but also get the community involved. Maybe I should talk to the mayor about getting you a certificate for your efforts."

"Oh, come on," Charlotte, quickly turning a nice pink to compliment her red dress, waved a dismissive hand, arms folding in front of her as an expression of her sudden bashfulness. "A certificate? Just for putting together a little show?"

"You also taught at the school," Dale pointed out, "And I think your art gallery performs an admirable service by providing cultural enrichment."

"Yes," Charlotte argued with him lightly at all his teasing making her blush like this, "and you provide the island with a much needed police force and a calm head and hand in the wake of all the weird ass things that go on around here. Are you going to get a certificate, too, then?"

"Just part of the job ma'am," Dale said in a mock official voice...

Which really wasn't much different than his regular voice. He did however offer a jaunty salute.

Charlotte couldn't help laughing. "You are," such a dork, "so adorable."

She gave Dale a slight nudge with her elbow. "So tell me. Did you pick out a favorite yet?" That was always one of her favorite parts, finding out what people liked most.

"I'm going to have to say this one (http://i390.photobucket.com/albums/oo343/strokesofgenius_album/IssunsAmmyPainting.jpg)," Dale said acknowledging the painting with a head tilt and a thoughtful gaze. "For some reason it just... reminds me of something."

"A...wolf, perhaps?" Charlotte asked, but the grin and the slight chuckle sort of gave her teasing away.

Dale was too much of a gentleman to stick his tongue out at Charlotte. He did give her a grin instead.

"Well... obviously. For some reason it just feels more familiar to me," he said scratching his neck. "Perhaps I came across a similar painting when I was in the Orient."

"It does seem to have a lot of Japanese influence in it," Charlotte agreed and , thinking of its tiny insectoid artist, she realized it was more than just an influence. Something else Dale said caught her attention far more and she gave him a surprised little look, "And when were you in the Orient?"

Dale shrugged a little. "Before I went to college a lot had happened in my life," he said. "And my father and I decided that I needed to get out of Philadelphia and travel. So... I worked my way across the ocean and around the world."

"Oh!" Charlotte gushed a little, with a bit of envious admiration. "That must have been such an experience! How have you not told me about this before?"

"I haven't told many people about it," Dale said thoughtfully. "In all the time I was gone from home I maybe sent my father three letters and even then there wasn't much detail. I just..."

He shrugged a little. "I'm not sure. Maybe I'm just trying to keep you on your toes."

"If it's me losing my interest for lack of intriguing things about you, Dale," Charlotte said with a soft grin, and leaning in a little to softly take his hand and kiss him on the cheek, "I'm almost positive you have nothing to worry about."

Dale gave Charlotte's hand a small squeeze and then gave her a big grin. "I think you're right," he said. "Doesn't mean I'm going to stop trying to keep you on your toes though."

Charlotte squeezed Dale's hand back a bit before wrinkling her nose at him. "Of course not. Wouldn't be you otherwise, right?"

Dale resisted the urge to lightly tap her nose. "Well it could be me but it wouldn't be as much fun..."

"You owe me stories about being in the Orient," Charlotte informed him importantly, wagging a finger slightly, and then wondering if 'the Orient' was really the most politically correct terminology. She didn't think on it too much, though.

"For you?" Dale said with a grin. "Anything."

Of course if her wish was for him to give up coffee he'd be asking for trouble.
